The Fine and Performing Arts
The Bayonne PublicSchool System is a great place for the performing and visual arts. With theater, art, and music we place an emphasis on the importance of the fine arts in our society.
Theater
BHS Drama has been a part of the Bayonne Public Schools landscape for more than 40 years, typically producing four shows per season: three main stage shows, a faculty student and alumni production, and a performing arts summer camp musical. BHS Drama also offers a variety of academic classes for all grade-levels and is open to any student who would like to participate in our productions. BHS Drama is a family, and as such, we welcome everyone with open arms. Go to: bhsdramasociety.com for more information.
Art
Bayonne Public Schools Art Department values Visual Art as a vital part of our contemporary society. We support the exploration of media while teaching traditional techniques and progressive creative thinking. We pride ourselves on the quality and consistency of the work produced by our talented student body. We strive to nurture creative expression and instill an appreciation of all the arts. With over 15 offerings including AP Studio Art class, the Art Department at Bayonne High School is the place to learn skills and express oneself!
Music
The Bayonne Public Schools Music Department focuses on student achievement in music. Our goal is to help students understand music concepts and performance skills so they can succeed in their schools and throughout the state in activities such as all state ensembles and state music festivals. The department is also committed to giving college bound music students the skills they need to succeed post high school. This is accomplished by having high quality music ensembles, (both large and chamber groups) musicals, cabaret performances and an AP Music Theory Course. Finally, the music department serves the non-traditional music students as well, by giving them opportunities to be involved in courses such music technology, beginning music theory, keyboarding, Glee Club, as well as numerous after school activities.
The Bayonne High School Fine and Performing Arts Academy
The key aspect in the re-launch of the Fine and Performing Arts Academy is the implementation of the Personalized Student Learning Plan (PSLP). The Personalized Student Learning Plan is defined by the state of New Jersey as a “formalized plan and process that involves students setting learning goals based on personal, academic, and career interests with the close support of adult mentors that include teachers, counselors, and parents.”
Upon acceptance into the Academy, students will design their PSLP with their parents and arts specialists. The PSLP will designate the student’s artistic area of focus, educational and artistic goals, and course track.
Academy students will follow an intensified track in their artistic area of focus, through exceptional elective offerings in the Bayonne High School Music, Art, Theater and Creative Writing departments. Monthly advisory meetings will track progress according to the PSLP. At the culmination of each school year, academy students will present a student-led conference, evaluating progress and learning goals.
A guilty conscience needs to confess. A work of art is a confession.
