Dear Students:

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year!

Attendance: Please be sure to arrive to class in a timely fashion. Consistent attendance is imperative for academic success. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain any missed work. If you are absent on the day of a test or a quiz, you must make an appointment for a makeup. The number of days absent is the number of days you will have to make up any and all missed work. If you cut class on the day of a test or quiz, a 0 will be given.

Decorum: In my classroom, I promote an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance, and students are expected to behave accordingly. It is important to stay attentive during class and arrive prepared with your required materials (your pen, notebook, highlighter, and Google Chromebook).

Cell Phones & Personal Electronic Devices: Cell phones must remain in your bookbag during the period. If you use your cell phone for personal use during class, a verbal warning will be issued once. If this warning is not heeded, a discipline report will be sent to your vice principal.

Assignments: All typed assignments are to be set in a size 12 Times New Roman or Courier New font, and double-spaced in order to leave room for written comments. You will be provided with a specific set of guidelines and a rubric for each assignment. All work is due at the beginning of class on the specified due date. You will have 2 days to bring in late essays, with 10 points subtracted per day.

Homework: Homework is posted both in the classroom and on this webpage. If you forget your homework, you may turn it in for half credit the following day only.

Plagiarism: Academic integrity is important. If you are caught plagiarizing any part of an assignment, as per English department policy, you will receive a 0, and I will inform both my director and your parent/guardian. Copying and pasting, and changing only a few words of someone else’s writing are considered plagiarism. MLA formatting and proper citation methods will be taught in class to help you avoid this problem.

Curriculum: In this course, we will study American literature, including The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Death of a SalesmanThe Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Streetcar Named DesireNo Country for Old MenThe Color Purple, and The Catcher in the Rye.

Grading: As per the Bayonne School District, a passing grade is 70, comprised of Summative Assessments - 60% and Formative Assessments - 40%.
