*It is important to note that our school day begins promptly at 8:00 a.m..  Students are allowed into the classroom between 7:45-7:50 a.m. to allow them to organize and get ready for the day.  Please note that when your child comes to school late it puts them behind in their academics and they may have additional work to complete at home because of it.  I also wanted to remind you to check your child’s planner to see the homework for each night, as well as, to clean out the  "Keep Home” side of the red folder.

*Parents please make sure that your child has on sneakers each day for P.E.

Classroom Management and Economy

Our class is using the Above the Line program which was developed by Corwin Kronenberg, a nationally recognized expert on behavior management.

The goal of the Above the Line plan is to promote a safe and caring environment where all students are taught the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behavior.  In the program, behavior is divided into three groups.  The groups are Above the line, Below the Line, and Bottom Line.

Students are expected to demonstrate “above the line” behaviors.  If a student makes poor behavior choices and falls “below the line”, the student will be expected to assume responsibility for the behavior.

Students who choose a “below the line” behavior will be given a choice by the adult in charge.  They will be asked if they want to “fix it” or have a consequence.  If the child selects the “fix it” option, the child will be expected to assume responsibility for developing a plan for fixing the problem.  The student completes a “fix it” form and a parent must sign it that evening.  It is returned to the teacher the next day.  Stopping to think about one’s behavior and developing a plan to fix the mistake, brings about lasting change rather than just saying “I’m sorry.”  If a child requests a consequence for “below the Line” behavior, the consequence will be worked about with the child and the adult in charge.

I do not have a standard consequence for every “below the line” behavior.  A consequence will be generated for every situation following these guiding principles.  The consequence must be related to the behavior, delivered respectfully, and it must be reasonable.

There are some behaviors that are considered totally inappropriate at school.  These behaviors are considered “bottom line”.  A “bottom line” behavior is considered a violation of state law, district policy, or school policy.  When a student demonstrates a “bottom line” behavior, it will require involvement by the principal and parents/guardians.

“Above the Line” steps:

  1.  Verbal warning- 3 strikes you’re out
  2. Name goes “below the line”
  3. Student improves behavior independently and his/her name returns “above the line”
  4. If the behavior persists until the end of the day, child completes a “fix it” plan before leaving school and returns it signed the next day.  If it is not returned signed, then a consequence will be given.
  5. If a child’s unacceptable behavior becomes a pattern and his/her “fix it” plan is not effective, the student will be sent to the principal for further consequences.

**Each student will begin each day “Above the Line”!!**

**Each day the entire class is “Above the Line”, a gem will be earned towards a class reward.**

Once again, the goal is to maintain a safe and caring learning environment for all of our students.  I appreciate your support and cooperation.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call or email me.
