*Camp Learned-A-Lot starts on Wednesday! As of Wednesday, your child will only need to bring their bookbag with their Important Paper folder inside- no binders anymore. Also there will be no more homework starting Wednesday. Please refer to the schedule I sent out last week so you know what your child needs to bring each day, so they can participate in all the fun activities we do. If you need another copy, just let me know and I'd be happy to email it to you.

S.S.- We'll be finishing up our Patriot Power Points using the laptops.

Grammar- We will be working on how to write correctly with quotation marks.
Science- We will be starting our unit on conservation and learning how to reuse, recycle, and reduce.

*CRCT begins this Wednesday and we will finish next Tuesday. Please make sure your child gets a good night's rest, has breakfast, and is on-time to school. Please also make sure your child has pencils and 2 snacks. One last note, please encourage your child to do their best on the test and leave it at that. They don't need any other pressures like the constant reminder of you have to pass it to go on to 4th grade. This just makes them more nervous and they won't perform well because of their nerves. All we can do now, is tell them to try their best! Thank you!!!

Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be taking the Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) on the following days:
Wednesday, April 18 - Reading
Thursday, April 19 - Language Arts
Friday, April 20 - Math
Monday, April 23 - Science
Tuesday, April 24 - Social Studies
We will charging up our brains by running around the track every morning from 7:20-7:45 and, thanks to the PTA, each student will get a healthy snack and small bottle of water each morning. It is important for your child to be at school on time each testing day. Testing begins in our school at 8:00 AM. Students will not be allowed to enter the testing room once testing has begun.

*This Friday is Arts in Ed Day! There will be no specials, but we will have recess. Also lunch will be in our room, so if you wanted to eat with your child on Friday, another day may be a better option! We are excited about a fun day learning about all different artists!

Writing- We will be finishing up our American Patriot papers (finally!) and sharing them with our classmates.

*I hope everyone stayed warm over the weekend! We'll be celebrating Valentine's Day on Tuesday, so be sure to send in those Valentine cards and box/bag. If your child is in Target, Ms. Neal and Ms. Goss have agreed to send them back a little early so they can celebrate with us.

* The January calendar that was sent home has a mistake on it. It says that the January book report is due at the end of the month but that's wrong. I decided to make them due at the end of February, so please just disregard that on the January calendar.
*If you want to use the Cobb Virtual Library to help with animal research, the username is cobb and the password is bird. If you would like to use any of the GALILEO resources also available on the Cobb Virtual Library the password is embrace (valid January 3 to March 24).
*Even though we are moving on to fractions, please continue to practice those multiplication facts with your child every night. Once they have mastered multiplication, you can move on to mastering division facts. We will continue to work on them at school, but unfortunately we don't have the time in our schedule to spend as much time as we need on getting the fluency they need with these facts. *Welcome back and I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We stayed here and hosted Thanksgiving at our house and had a great time. Then my whole family decided to get sick with a nasty stomach virus and it wasn't so fun! We had a visit to the hospital to get my little boy some fluids, because he was so dehydrated. So I hope all of you were healthy and enjoyed some family time!

Guided Reading- We will spend another week reading fables and writing summaries for the stories we read.
Guided Math- We will be working on memorizing our multiplication facts with a focus on the 6, 7, and 8 families. These families are very hard and require a lot of repetition.
Writing- We will be writing Responses to Literature which include a summary, connections, and a recommendation.
Grammar- We will be learning how to use quotation marks correctly.
Science- We will be reviewing for our test this Friday on soils.
S.S.- We'll be starting to learn about our 2nd Patriot, Frederick Douglass.

Guided Math- We will be starting multiplication this week! We will be learning how to use repeated addition (2x3=6 3+3=6) and arrays to answer a multiplication problem. Get those flashcards ready or go get some at the dollar store!

*Testing is now over!!!! Everyone hung in there through 8 long days of testing and did a great job! Results should arrive sometime in December.

*IDENT-A-KID CARDS ARE BACK!
IDENT-A-KID Response cards are a photo ID of your child (the size of a driver's license) that provides instant and accurate information to help locate your child if they are lost or missing. All information is confidential and secure and is returned with your card. Also available this year is eKid- ID, an electronic duplication if the Ident-a-Kid Card sent directly to your cell phone. 1 card is $8.00, 2 cards and eKid-ID is $10.00, and 3 cards and eKid-ID is $12.00. Forms will be sent home in your child's back pack this week. If you are interested, please send this form back to Tritt no later than Friday, October 21, 2011 at 8:00 AM, since forms will be processed that day.

The new AR goal for October is 6 stickers (1 sticker=picture book and 2+ stickers=chapter book).
*Alright, it's about to begin... 8 days of standardized testing! We'll be taking the CogAT this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The ITBS will be given Monday through Friday of next week. In order for your child to perform at his/her best, please make sure your child is at school on time, gets a good night sleep, and eats breakfast. Guided Reading- We will be working on cause and effect in reading groups this week.
Guided Math- We will be learning how to count back change with the fewest amount of coins. This can be a very challenging skill and may take some time to master, so please be patient with homework!
Writing- We will be finishing our narratives this week and sharing them with the class (if they want to).
Grammar- We are going to learn about compound sentences and subject/verb agreement.
Science- We are learning about how fossils are formed and what they can tell us about the past.

*What are we learning this week?
Guided Reading- I'm very excited because we will be starting Literacy Circles this week. Each group will have their own leveled chapter book. They'll be assigned a chapter or two to read and then do a 'job' on what they have read. For example, if they are the Amazing Artist, they'll draw a picture of an important part of the chapter they read and write why it was so important. Each week they'll have a different job.
Whole Group Reading- We'll be starting a book study on the book Because of Winn Dixie. We'll be introduced to the novel by discussing vocabulary words, setting, and characters. We'll be reading a chapter a day by ourselves, with a partner, group, or teacher read aloud and answering comprehension questions. Thanks to our wonderful PTA every student has their own copy of the book to use during our study!!!
Guided Math- We will be learning how to find the area of a shape by multiplying along with continuing to learn our multiplication facts. Also, we've started Rocket Math. They have to answer 40 multiplication questions in 3 minutes with 2 or less errors to move to the next level. Ask your child what level they are on!
Writing- In our novel study, Because of Winn Dixie, they have a birthday party. So we'll be brainstorming and prewriting about what type of birthday party theme is the best and why.
Grammar- We are going to learn about singular and plural nouns.
Science- We'll be reviewing and testing on Rocks and Minerals.
S.S.- We're continuing to learn about the 3 levels of government and the responsibilities of each level.

The TTF Annual Fund Campaign ends on Friday, September 9th. The class in each grade with the highest PARTICIPATION at that time will win an in-school field trip with Reptile Wrangler! Guided Reading- We will be reading Fables in reading groups and figuring out the author's purpose and recalling facts.
Guided Math- We are continuing place value up to the ten thousands place and learning how to write numbers 5 different ways. We'll also be working on the value and place value of a number.I will introduce adding and subtracting within 1,000 using different strategies and algorithms, and the children will work on these skills in small group with me. In the other groups they will continue to use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Writing- We are writing narratives this week on a place they love to go.
Grammar- We'll be reviewing complete subjects and predicates from last week and learning how to locate simple subjects and predicates.
Science- We are continuing to learn about Rocks and Minerals and will be discussing the rock cycle.
S.S.- We'll be learning the 3 levels of government (local, state, and national) and what each level does.

*What are we learning this week?
Reading- We are starting guided reading groups by reading Traditional Literature stories. We'll be working on recognizing the author's purpose along with identifying words with prefixes.
Guided Math- We are starting place value and focusing on rounding to the nearest 10s (ex: 23=20 & 234=230) and 100s (169=200 & 2,459=2,500) . We'll also be learning how to write a number at least 2 different ways (ex: 415= 4 hundreds, 1 ten, & 5 ones OR 4 hundreds & 15 ones).
Writing- After reading the book How Full is Your Bucket?, we will be writing an opinion piece on why it's important to fill other people's buckets with kind words.
Grammar- We'll be learning what makes a sentence complete and then jumping right into complete subjects and predicates. He likes to play soccer. He=complete subject likes to play soccer=complete predicate
Science- We are starting out with Rocks and Minerals and will be learning the 3 types of rocks- metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary.
S.S.- We are learning about Greece and how they influenced the United States with their architecture, democracy, and Olympics.
