Baking Bonanza!
During this enrichment class, you will learn the basics of baking from two pros! The class will include materials, you need to bring your enthusiasm and appetite! Space is limited. This enrichment class is not appropriate for students with food allergies.
Yoga and Meditation
Do you need to unwind and clear your mind? Join us in Yoga and Meditation! Learn simple strategies and techniques of stretching, breathing, and visualization to enhance your daily activities! Please bring a yoga mat or towel, comfortable clothes, and a water bottle.
Dungeons and Dragons
Who needs video games? Students who attend this class will use their imaginations to create mythical characters, explore dungeons and slay dangerous monsters in the original, classic role-playing game!
Perfect Party Planning
Are you celebrating a birthday soon? During the summer, will you be having a barbeque or pool party? If you enjoy parties and want to explore how to be a "Perfect Party Planner" than this course is for you. During the time with us, you will learn how to use technology to gain ideas, make up a guest list, and create invitations and grocery lists for your party!
NJ Archeology
Have you ever wondered what New Jersey looked like in the past or who lived here before you? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an archeologist? Come on a journey to discover how to excavate artifacts, date them, identify them, and display them! You will have an opportunity to excavate real artifacts yourself right out of the dirt, and will be challenged to identify them and display them through an interactive web based timeline to your peers! All materials will come from our PTO sponsored Morris Museum Loan Partnership!
Photostory
Students will take pictures and use those pictures to create "Photostories" on the computer and present them to the other students in the cluster. Students are encouraged to also bring in their own favorite photos on a CD, DVD or a Flash Drive to use.
Orienteering
Learn how to track down treasure like the pirates and explorers did long ago! Using a compass, pacing, and directions, discover how to zero in on the prize! Then create your own set of directions using the tracking skills you have mastered. Finally, watch closely as another team searches for your treasure!
Friendship Bracelets
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make different styles of friendship bracelets? Are you an expert at making bracelets and would like to teach others? Come learn about the history of friendship bracelets, teach others, and learn different knotting patterns.
Word Board Games
The course will focus on developing strategies for and playing board games, which utilize word knowledge and vocabulary skills such as Scrabble.
Mock Trial
Expand your knowledge of the justice system by showcasing your courtroom skills in mock trials. You will have the opportunity to read, practice, and perform mock trials with your peers.
Discovering Ourselves Through Poetry
Although we are all part of the Hillside garden, each of us is a flower that possesses unique qualities. It is this uniqueness that makes the garden so diverse. Come explore who you are as an individual and what defines you. Through the reading and writing of poetry, you will collect and compose pieces to become a part of a self-portrait booklet.
Fun With Crafts
We will be making duct tape items, lanyard key chains, and jewelry.
The Art of Construction
Students will explore engineering and construction principles with hands on activities and projects.
Scrapbooking and Cardmaking
Do you enjoy being creative? Do you have pictures you'd like to feature in a book and/or do you like to send people special cards that you've made yourself? Then this enrichment course is for you! We'll supply the colored paper, rubber stamps and scrapbooking tools ~ all you are encouraged to bring are your bright ideas! You have an open invitation! It's all good!!
Dance
Students will have the opportunity to collaborate, choreograph, and teach one another a variety of dance moves, which will ultimately result in one final dance routine created by the students.
Mad Science
Do you crave bubbling potions, slimy ooze and ghoulish glowing objects? It's time to break out the lab coat and do (mad) science! These projects and experiments are safe enough for young mad scientists, though mad scientists of any age can do them.
Using Accents and Dialects in Performance
Actors often have to portray characters that speak with an accent or use a dialect. Join this enrichment class to explore the many facets of speaking English, using a foreign accent or an American dialect. We will explore the differences between American English and British English, as well as learn how to speak with a proper English accent and a British Cockney accent. We will also discover the differences between and American Southern dialect and the regional dialects of New York and New Jersey. Impress your friends and family as you learn how to speak with so many different accents.
Cycling Techniques
Students will learn the proper cycling rules when riding on road or trails, strategies on how to change gears (hills), maneuver obstacles, map out trails(google maps) and road courses as well as basic maintenance of a bike (tire, brakes, saddle, etc.)
Bollywood Dance
Students will assist in choreographing a short segment of a dance in the Bollywood genre of dance.
Chocolate Creations
Do you love chocolate? Chocolate Creations will explore the science behind how chocolate is made and how it can be transformed to make delicious treats. Students will create a variety of amazingly fun and delectable chocolate delights to enjoy or give as gifts. Students will be provided with a list of required supplies needed for each class. This enrichment class is not appropriate for students with food allergies.
Mural Painting in the Glass Hallway
Students will paint designs on the windows in the glass hallway to make our sunny spot even more welcoming. Students should bring their own paintbrushes and smocks.
K’nex Egg Transport
Student teams will create an egg transport vehicle from K'nex. Once vehicle is created, teams will race their vehicles to see which will travel the furthest while protecting the egg.
Animal Safety
We are in communication with St. Hubert's in efforts to coordinate the dates and times.
Mathematical Designs
Explore the connection between art and math by creating curves from straight lines and decoding silhouettes into puzzle pieces.
Experiencing Autism
Experiencing Autism is deigned to give students a better understanding of autism through hands on activities. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in fun, leisure activities with the students in the ABA program. This course is designed to enhance the experience of the peer buddy program; however, prior experience as a peer buddy is not required.
Musical Improvisation
If you like being creative and making up your own music, then this is the class for you! Bring your instruments and the instructors will show you how to improvise using techniques from periods of musical history including Jazz and Contemporary.
Just Tape it!
Are you interested in the new craze of duct taping? Well come join us to create fun and easy projects using duct tape, as well as decorating ordinary objects to jazz them up! Bring your own duct tape and let’s start creating!
World of Words
Words! Words! Everywhere! We will explore the humor, fun and power of words by searching the world for examples of entertaining word choice! Once inspired, we will create our own masterpieces: poems, stories, skits, songs, games! We live in a world of words! It's time to Celebrate them!
Picture Book Making
Do you love reading picture books? Have you always dreamed of becoming a real author? If so, this is the class for you! You will write and design an original picture book to store in Hillside's Library.
"A Minute to Win It" Strategies Games
In this enrichment class, students will have the opportunity to tackle unique and exciting challenges. Learn different strategies and techniques to complete the challenges in one minute. Do you have what it takes to win in it in a minute?
Public Speaking
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of public speaking. We will examine the basics, from dealing with nervousness and gauging an audience, to using visual aids as support. Students will work on giving a speech that will enhance their appreciation of, and comfort with, the art of public speaking. (Students who have anxiety about public speaking are strongly encouraged to enroll.)
Hawk Art
Let’s create Hillside’s mascot, “THE HAWK,” to be displayed in the school lobby!!! Do you have school spirit? Do you enjoy art? Do you like to build things and have lots of fun? If you said yes to these questions then you may be perfect to help be a part of a team of artists that will work together to make a large sculpture out of recycled aluminums cans of our school Mascot, “THE HAWK,” to be displayed in the school’s lobby upon completion! Join us, but be ready to have lots of fun and be super creative!
Stock Market lunch club begins Thursday January 31st and runs through mid-May. It is run as a voluntary club that meets 4th period during 5th grade lunch/recess. Students participate in small teams against other NJ schools, investing a virtual $100,000 in the stocks and then following their progress as their fortunes rise and fall with the real markets.
HILLSIDE MATH LEAGUE
A fun and competitive club.
The Math Club meets once a month on a Friday morning. Each session, the members complete a different math assessment. Scores are kept and at the end of the school year prizes are given out to the members with the most points.

Extra Help (posted 9/7/12)
In order to avoid conflict with Band and Orchestra rehearsals, I have changed my extra help day to Wednesday at 8:30. If your child has missed lessons, has questions or is otherwise struggling in any subject I teach, please take advantage of this important help.

I am Mr. Meyer and I will be teaching 5th grade Math, E-math, Social Studies and Science this year. If you see me on your schedule, then welcome, and get ready for an awesome year!
