Second Grade Summer Reading

Dear Parents,

Reading is a skill just like riding a bike or roller-skating.  You may wonder how.  Well, it is true because the only way to continue to improve this skill like any other is to practice doing it.  In hopes of helping each student develop better reading skills and a love of reading, I have developed a summer reading plan that allows for flexibility and choice.

Upcoming second graders are required to read a minimum of 400 minutes over the Summer in preparation for school in September.  Your child may choose what he/she wants to read.  I encourage you to help your child choose a variety of quality literature to reach this goal.  A list of appropriate books for your child’s reading level is included.  Books OTHER than those on this list CAN be read.  Allow your child to use the “Five Finger Rule” when choosing books – open the book of choice to ANY page of the book…if your child incorrectly reads FIVE words on the page, this book is considered too difficult.

To record the amount of time read, please have your child complete the coloring pages.  He/she is to color ONE item each time they read for ten minutes. In addition, I have included a “Home Reading Log.”  This log encourages your child to read DAILY!  Now I KNOW that summer plans can get in the way…this is why I say the log ENCOURAGES daily reading.  Please be HONEST when completing this log…do NOT wait to fill it in the night before school starts (Can YOU believe SOMEONE might actually think about doing that!!!)  As your child reads, please complete the title, a BRIEF summary or thought on what was read, the minutes, and signature.  My goal is to have your child ENJOY reading!  Please give your child whatever assistance he/she needs to record the books read.  The coloring pages and book log should be brought to school on the first day of class in September.

Please let me know if you have any questions concerning your child’s summer reading.  I look forward to seeing you in second grade!!  Have a “sun-sational” summer and “jump into a good book…read it…read it…read it!!!!!!"
