Classroom Procedures

ID Badges:

You must have YOUR ID badge around your neck as you enter the classroom. Students without ID badges must go to attendance and get a temporary. If you wear someone else’s badge, then you will be disciplined for the infraction.

Tardy Policy:

If you are tardy for class, you must get an admit from Attendance. No one will be let in without a admit slip. If you need to finish a test, then your teacher must call me and let me know you are taking a test so I do not mark you as skipped.

Attendance:

Attendance is an expected part of this course. We will work every single day. Please do not ever ask if we are doing anything on a certain day because the answer is always ABSOLUTELY! If you must miss class, then you need to be aware of the make-up policy.

Make-up Work:

If you missed school and have an admit, it must be placed in the basket on my desk before the tardy bell rings. All homework is due even if you missed the lesson. Get the notes from someone else. If the homework is a worksheet, you can download it online.  For example, if you miss a Tuesday, then when you return Wednesday, you must have Monday’s homework and Tuesdays’ homework. Not having Tuesday’s homework will give you a zero. If you miss a test, you need to take it after school the day you return. Missing another class to make-up a test will just get you even further behind.

If you miss a test because you were on a field trip for another class, then arrange to come during that class, when I am giving a test, to make-up your test.

Anyone missing a test with an excused absence will take a make-up version of the test and a 0 will be recorded until the test is taken and graded.

Respect:

The success of every student in this class depends on the attitudes of the teacher and the individual students in the class. In order for us to meet our goals, we will have to work together. You should not only strive for your goals, but the goals of your group. If we can be concerned with the learning of others as well, then every student will succeed. Here are some examples of ways we can succeed as a class:

  • Call your classmates if they miss class.
  • Meet with other students to study for tests.
  • Come to tutoring.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
  • Be respectful. Don’t talk while the teacher is talking and don’t talk while students are talking.
  • Do not spend class time acting out.
  • Pay attention to directions and participate actively in each lesson.

Note–taking:

You are required to take notes in this class. I would encourage you to use colored ink/markers/pencils and highlighters to make certain things stand out in your notes. All of your notes must be kept the composition book for the current 9-weeks and you must also have a table of contents for your notes. You may choose to recopy your notes. That is a great way to study. The composition book will be graded periodically.

Pencils:

All homework, classwork, tests, and quizzes must be done in pencil. Failure to use pencil when working homework, classwork, tests, and/or quizzes will result in a 0 for that assignment/test/quiz.

Cheating:

It is unfortunate that I even have to address this, but you will not cheat for any reason in my class. Examples of cheating include (but are not limited to):

  • Talking during a test
  • Copying homework
  • Letting someone copy your homework
  • Passing someone else’s work off as your own
  • Having someone else complete an assignment for you
  • Texting the answers to an assignment or test
  • Using your cell phone in class
  • Discussing a test or quiz with students who have not taken it
  • Using notes or other aides during a test or quiz
  • Leaving answers in the calculator or sharing calculators during a test
  • Using a non-classroom set calculator on a test or quiz.

Homework:

You are expected to do all your homework assignments. When you miss a total of 3 assignments in nine weeks, your parents will be contacted. Your homework has to be done in pencil or it will not be accepted. Each homework assignment should be kept in your 3-ring binder. I will check homework at the beginning of class for 4 points a day. Once you reach 100 points, homework will be 4 bonus points a day. These points add up. They can raise your final grade an entire letter grade. Homework will be limited to 15-25 problems when possible. Please attempt every problem because sometimes they are easier in a different section. You must write the problem and show all necessary work to receive credit for the homework…just listing answers is not sufficient for homework credit.

 Vocabulary Quizzes:

There is a lot of vocabulary in math, so from time to time we will have vocabulary quizzes. It is the students’ responsibility to learn vocabulary the day it is given. Some of these quizzes will be announced and some of them will be surprises! You must make an effort to keep up in this class.

Tutoring:

I will be available after school Monday – Thursday for help. Please make arrangements with me in advance if you need help.  If for some reason you need to stay after on a Friday, please let me know in advance and I will make arrangements to stay on Friday as well.

Projects:

You will have several projects throughout the year. It is imperative that you take these projects seriously and give them all of your attention. You will be given instructions and a rubric several days in advance of the due date so that you will have plenty of time to do quality work. If you find you are struggling with a project or assignment, then you need to come to tutoring after school before it’s too late. Do NOT wait until the last minute to address any problems. Get them done early!

TI-30X II S or B (***not multi-view) Calculators:

For Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus, the TI-30X II S or B (solar or battery, color does not matter,***multi-view is not permissible) will be the primary calculator. In the classroom, the TI-30X II S or B (***not multi-view) are the only calculator models allowed. I have a classroom set so it is not necessary to bring your own. If you wish to purchase your own, the TI-30X II S or B (***not multi-view) runs between $9.00 and $15.00. Be sure to shop the back to school specials!

We are very fortunate to have a classroom set of calculators. You are not required to purchase one, but you are required to take good care of the one assigned to you. The calculators must not leave the classroom. If you deface the calculator in any way, your privileges will be revoked. If any calculator is missing, the entire set will be locked away and there will not be allowed ANY calculator use in the classroom until the missing one returns or I deem it acceptable again.

Graphing calculators will be used on occasion. I have a classroom set that will be used on those occasions.

Why is the TI-30X II S or B (***multi-view is not permissible) the only calculator allowed? Specific skills will be taught and tested. Some skills can be performed by some calculators, rather than worked out by the student. These skills are required by state community colleges and universities that, currently, either do not allow calculators or only allow the TI-30X II S or B (***multi-view is not permissible). These skills will be a necessity to succeed in math courses in higher education. It is not fair for one student to have a calculator that does the work and another have to manually work it out. Since the community colleges and universities require it be worked out, students in my class will have to demonstrate manual mastery of these skills.

For all tests and quizzes, only my classroom calculators can be used.

Cell Phones and MP3 Players (iPods)

Cell phones are not allowed at school. There is no need for one in my class. The calculator feature in these devices is not acceptable in my classroom. If I see or hear a student’s cell phone or mp3 player, it will be picked up. Failure to turn over the device, when asked, will be viewed as challenging authority and strong disciplinary action will be taken.
