The River’s Thompson Prepares Students for Tomorrow
By Kathy Lindergren
February 2013 Tech Tribune
As I enter Dr. Mary Thompson’s Braden River High School classroom, I can hear Patrick Smith’s A Land Remembered. An audio book fills the air with the narrator’s voice. Students are attentive, clasping their books and reading along. Thompson is thrilled, “It’s a first. Students want to read the entire book, cover to cover.” The initial reading, however, is just the beginning.
As students access one of Thompson’s files for further direction they discover that they will be creating and directing a movie and that she has assigned a role to each student. Using Photostory, Microsoft’s free digital storytelling solution and Soundbooth, Adobe’s audio editing application, students will produce three minute
videos for each of the novel’s chapters.
Students begin by searching the Internet to find images to bring the story to life. As the videos take form, I’m taken by the unique perspective each student brings to the project. You can really get a clear view into a student’s understanding by the images he or she selects to convey meaning. Their creativity, sense of humor and imagination speak volumes. Junior Evan Geis shared, “Researching the time period on the Internet was particularly helpful. I was able to learn about the challenges the pioneers had to face. Knowing that helped me to develop a point of view for my movie.”
Initially, some students were overwhelmed at the scope of the project. Documents, tutorials, screenplays and StoryBoarding videos on YouTube helped the soon-to-be movie directors prepare for the challenge. Thompson guided students daily as they gained confidence in applying new skills. Students communicate and collaborate
with one another throughout production using Gaggle, a safe student email solution provided by the District. Thompson reflected, “The Introduction to Information Technology class prepares students for the future by giving them hands-on, authentic learning experiences using 21st century tools.” Sophomores Rachel and An’Drea concur. “Before this year, I wasn’t interested in technology, but now we use all the options that are available to us in this class and in our other classes.”
As students work toward finishing their projects, they are enthusiastic about sharing what they’ve produced with one another. Each production revolves around a family battling the hardships of the frontier. Though the characters and scenes are unique, the exciting story they tell against the backdrop of Florida’s historical and cultural heritage is consistent.
