Look What We’re Studying

Reading:  We will continue close reading the next nine chapters of When You Reach Me (pages 54 through 78).  Before reading, we will make predictions about new characters that we’ve been introduced to.  Furthermore, we will answer questions that go along with the text.  We will also have discussions about the characters and developing story.

Math:  We will review the skills explored in Unit 7 (exponents, parentheses, PEMDAS, line graphs, negative numbers, and adding & subtracting negative numbers).

Writing:  We will be looking at informational texts and ways to research them in order to write our own informational book chapter.  This week, we will continue learning to research by reading two mentor texts, “Incredible Animal Ears” and “Dances with Animals.”  We will read these texts twice as a reader and once as a writer (like close reading!).

Spelling:  We will spell words with the final n, an, cher, or zher sounds like in words such as certain, nature, or treasure.  We will finish our week by introducing words with the final ij, iv, and is sounds like in words such as knowledge, olive, and service.

Science:  We will examine matter and its properties.  We will do this by defining density and learning how to measure it.  Then, we will compare and contrast mixtures and solutions.  Finally, we will begin to examine the different states of matter.

Hello everyone!  Just a few reminders as the holiday break quickly approaches!

1.  Progress reports were sent home today.  I have asked the students to get the top copy signed and the bottom copy you may keep.  The students need to have it signed by this Friday (12/19)

2.  We are doing a Secret Santa this year.  There are further instructions below.  If there are any students who cannot get a gift, please contact me before the end of the week so I can make sure that everyone has something to open!

3.  Our holiday party will begin at 2:30 on December 22.  The students will be participating in a holiday craft, listening to holiday music, and having some yummy snacks!  All parents are more than welcome to attend.

If you have any questions, feel free to call or email me!

To celebrate the holiday season, our class has decided to take part in Secret Santa. We filled out a short survey today asking about items that we would like to receive as a gift. Then, we took turns choosing one of our classmates from a bin. We are all very excited!

Please remember, do not give away the person you picked for Secret Santa!

I asked all of the students to either make their present or to spend no more than $10. If there are any students who can not bring in a gift or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email me. I will make sure that all of the students have a gift to open. We will be exchanging our Pollyanna gifts at our holiday party on December 22. All parents are welcome to attend.

Hello! My name is Miss Rodia and I am looking forward to having you in my 5th Grade Class this year!

We have an exciting school year ahead of us. I guarantee you that you will learn a lot and have a lot of fun learning!

Before school starts, I thought you would like to know a little bit about me. I was born and grew up in Cape May Court House, New Jersey. I studied Literature and Education at the Richard Stockton College of NJ. On April 18, 2015, I am getting married and I am very excited! Along with planning my wedding, one of my favorite things to do is spend time with my family and friends. I love to spend time with my dad, my mom, and my little sister as well as our dog, Dozer, and our cat, Landfill (I’ll explain the names when I meet you). Some other fun things that I like to do include reading, watching movies, and making fun crafts for my classroom.

On the side bar that says "Our School Suppy List" is a list of supplies that you will need for our classroom. You do not need to have these supplies until Monday, September 8.

I am really looking forward to meeting you and getting to know more about you. I know we will have a great year together. Enjoy the rest of your summer vacation.

I look forward to seeing you in class on September 3.

In the future, this website will include information about important dates, upcoming events, homework, and happenings in the classroom.  As well as updating the website, I will be sending home a weekly classroom newsletter.
