Good Readers become good readers by practicing!

You need to read out loud to an adult every day for 5, 10 or 15 min. The longer you read out loud every day the better.

What Do Good Readers Do?
l. WORD LEVEL
–Move your eyes left to right across the page
–Use a pencil to point under each word
Read from the beginning to the middle and end parts of each word. Don't assume you know a word because of the first letter. You have to work through the whole word.
When you see a word you don't know, find the word parts.
For example: in the word 'character', the word parts are char  act  er. You would say char act er  . Put the parts together to say the whole word, character.
To understand the passage–Locate words you know and use them as anchors

MONITOR FOR MEANING AT ALL TIMES- Does it
    make sense? (word level)
Monitor for language- Does it sound right?
Go back and reread when meaning breaks down
if you aren't sure that you are pronouncing a word correctly keeping reading the paragraph, & then go back to figure word based on context
Read high frequency words automatically.

FLUENCY
Read fluently with proper phrasing and voice
Read with attention to punctuation

COMPREHENSION- PASSAGE LEVEL

MONITOR FOR MEANING- Do I understand this? (passage level)
Stop and think as you read; retell
Make connections- What does this remind you of?
Ask yourself questions as you read?
Make pictures in your mind; visualize what you are reading
Use context clues to figure out meaning of new words

Make inferences as you read- think about what is probably true (through illustrations and text)
