Welcome parents and 2010-2011 first graders!  I am so excited about a brand new school year, and I can't wait to teach you everything you need to know in first grade.  Remember, the first day of school is Monday, August 16, 2010 for first graders. Below, you will find general information about what we will be doing in class during the week.  Please refer to my webpage periodically as information is subject to change.  In the event that Internet access is not available to you, information contained on this page will be distributed as the first page of your child's weekly study guides which will go home on Mondays for a few weeks.

Reading
Mondays - Students are to read and parents are to sign "take home books".  (You are sure to find out what these are real soon.) It will be located inside the plastic pocket of your child's student planner.  It would be very helpful if the take home book could be returned there after the assignment is complete.

Tuesdays - Students are to study vocabulary flashcards and definitions for the words.  They will be located inside the plastic pocket of your child's planner.  Please remember to have your child return the flashcards to the plastic pocket of their planner so that they could be used for different activities in class during the week.

Wednesdays - Students are to read and parents are to sign "home study books".

Thursdays - Students are to read week's story in the reading textbooks.  Parents, be sure to ask your child questions during and after the reading.

Fridays - Reading tests are scheduled for this day.

Language
A study guide goes home on Thursdays.  It will be located inside the plastic pocket of the student planner.  Please have your child return it to this pocket after completing.  Homework is not assigned nightly in language, but please be sure to check your child's daily folder for information on what was done in class that day.  Language tests are usually scheduled for Friday.

Spelling
Mondays - Students are to complete a worksheet, usually in the form of a T-Chart with spelling words to accompany it.  These materials will be found inside your child's plastic pocket of their student planners.

Tuesday and Wednesday - Students are to write spelling words three times each.  Later during the year, the students will have to include one or two sentences.  Capitalization and punctuation is always important when writing these sentences.

Handwriting
Handwriting is completed in class and rarely goes home as a homework assignment.  Just be sure to review handwriting worksheets found inside your child's plastic folder, and discuss the strokes used to correctly form letters, numbers, punctuation marks, etc.  Identify guidelines used to form them as well.  Ask questions like, "Does this letter have any straight lines?  If so, how many?  Any circles or curves?  Where should I start if I want to write a (letter, number, etc.)?"

Math
Homework will usually be given nightly.

Social Living
Study guide will either be included in the week's study guide or sent home a few days before the test.
