Students will receive their spelling words on Friday. They will write them down in their agendas during class. Over the next week, students must practice their words and complete ONE activity (see below) to be passed in the following Thursday. Each child will take a spelling test on Friday. If your child would like to complete more than one activity, they can record it to be passed it but it is not required.

Must Do (ONE)

Assist your child in doing a word hunt, looking for words in a book they have already read that have the same sound, pattern, or both. Try to find two or three for each category. Record spelling words along with your "new words" in your spelling notebook. Write all of your spelling words in a sort, then add additional words from a book that you are reading.

Complete a CLOSED SORT with your words and sort them into different categories as listed on the spelling word list. The categories for the closed sort are listed on the top of your child’s spelling list. Read each word aloud during this activity. Ask your child to explain to you why the words are sorted in a particular way – what does the sort reveal about spelling in general? Record your sort in your spelling notebook.

Complete an open sort with your child. This is a sort where your child finds similarities within words. Examples would be – nouns, adjectives, verbs, spelling patterns, rhyming, endings, prefixes, suffixes, etc. Record your sort in your spelling notebook.

May Do

  • Write the dictionary definition for your spelling words.

  • Write a letter or a story using all of your spelling words. (Parents – this is a great activity that will encourage writing at home!)

  • Put your words in ABC order.

  • Write a sentence for each word. Underline the spelling words.

  • Write a sentence for each word using a classmate’s name.

  • Number the letters of the alphabet. (A = 1, B = 2, C = 3) Now write your words and add the value of each word. Circle the highest and lowest valued words. Example: cab 3+1+2 = 6

  • Divide each word into syllables. Clap out the words to check yourself.

  • Make a flashcard for each word.

  • Make a word search with your spelling words.

  • Cut letters out of a magazine and glue them together to make your words.

  • Using a newspaper, highlight spelling words in an article.

  • Type out your spelling words on the computer. Use different fonts for each word.
