Welcome to Fifth Grade.

I'm the 5th Grade Literacy and Social Studies teacher with Mrs. Mahan teaching Math and Science.

We will be doing LOTS of reading and writing.

Our main homework will be reading for 30 minutes each day, 10 of which needs to be ORALLY, and filling out a Thinkmark about their reading for the evening.  This is to be done EVERY night.  Parents are to sign/initial Thinkmarks.  These will be turned in and passed out on Mondays.

Spelling words will be given on Mondays.  We will work with them each day, but they will also need to practice them some before the tests on Fridays.

Students will be required to read 4 books this first nine weeks, 5 books the second nine weeks, 6 books the third nine weeks, and 7 books the last nine weeks.  For each book that is read, students will fill out a book report sheet and complete a "project" to attach to (or turn in with) the report sheet.  I will teach them how to fill out the report and how to do the "projects before they have to do them.

We will write every week, but there will be one major writing project each nine weeks.

Monday Folders will go out every Monday with the previous week's work in it.  Please go over the work to see how your child is doing academically.  Also recorded are any tickets gotten that week, which will indicate behavior problems OR problems getting work done.  Please sign and return the notebook on Tuesdays.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send a note or an e-mail.  Agenda/Homework Notebooks are a good place to write notes to me.  I WILL answer.  IF I don't get back to you immediately, write again, or CALL to make sure I got the message!  Monday Folders are also an excellent place to write notes.
