Course Descriptions
English 12
This course is designed to develop skills in the areas of reading and writing (grammar) that will serve students no matter their path after high school--college, technical school, or starting a job.  Various reading strategies will be emphasized along with various types of writing--personal narratives, expository writing, literary analysis, persuasive writing, descriptive writing, researched writing, and creative writing.  The reading and writing assignments will vary greatly.  The reading assignments may be as long as a novel or as short as an article.  They may be relatively easy or very difficult.  This is true to mirror life. Some readings will be for enjoyment largely; while others will be technical (we all have to read directions for our DVD players or letters from insurance companies).  Lastly, some reading is purely intellectual--literary analysis.  This will be of interest to some, but more importantly it is the best vehicle for teaching to read between and beyond what is written on the line.  These skills will all convert to thinking skills and will be used throughout a person's lifetime.  The vehicle for teaching these skills will be British Literature; therefore, the student will also receive content knowledge of these authors and this culture that has been so influential on our country.

English 10
This course will use the study of literature and composition to enhance reading, writing, and thinking skills.  The first few weeks of this course will be devoted to general composition skills including grammar.  The following weeks will be divided between studying World literature and reading a wide variety of student selected novels.  The focus will be on reading for understanding and analysis, encouraging students to develop critical thinking and writing skills.
