This is a very special year in your child's school career.  First Grade is a time to experience important transitions and acquire new skills.  During the year, your child will learn how to read and write stories, add, subtract, and so much more.  We hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child's years of schooling!

Supplies
Please provide your child with a backpack,  a folder, a 100 page marble composition book, and a pencil case.  These items are very important in helping to teach your child to become organized.  Please replace these items as necessary.  Some optional items that could be helpful but not necessary would be extra pencils, extra crayons (no more than 24), and glue sticks.  Pencils, crayons, paste, and glue will be supplied as needed.  Too many supplies may become distractions.

Homework
Homework is given to students Monday through Thursday.  No homework on Fridays (everyone needs a break)!  Homework usually consists of one Language Arts worksheet and one Math worksheet.  They will be due on the next day.  If for some reason they can not be turned in that day they may be turned in at any time of that marking period with a note from home.  Homework and other important information will be included in your child's homework folder.

Word Lists
Word lists are used to help build the students' sight word vocabulary.  The words are taken from the stories we read in class.  The more sight words a child knows, the more he/she can concentrate on comprehhension.  The llists will be sent home in the beginning of the year.  They should be kept in the folders at all times.  They will be checked at least once a week.  As a list is mastered, anew one will be added.  The students will work at their own pace.

Lunch Money
Lunch money should be sent to school in an envelope marked with your child's name and homeroom.  Our lunch is from 11:25-12:05

Climate Control
Our classrooms are climate controlled.  In warm weather the classrooms can get chilly.  Please dress your children for the classroom and as per the dress code.  It may be too cold for sleeveless shirts and dresses.

 Spelling words

Spelling words will be given each week to go along with the stories we read in class.  Look for the Spelling Take Home sheets for the new words and the date of the test (not always on a Friday).  Here are the first few lists of spelling words.
