The courses I teach are based on a functional curriculum. Each student has an Individual Educational Plan developed for his/her needs at least once a year.
Language Arts: This course is designed to develop skills in functional word recognition, locating information, and essential oral and written information in real life situations.
Math: This course is designed to develop skills found in real world situations. I will address such areas as money usage, time, budgeting, and calculator skills.
Reading: This course is designed to increase vocabulary as well as comprehension skills. Current event readers are also used to keep students aware of the world around them.
Occupational Preparations: This course is designed to place students in unpaid job training situations within the school. Students are provided an opportunity to acquire appropriate work behaviors and job skills.
Interpersonal Relationships: This course is designed to increase the student’s social interaction, coping abilities, self-awareness, and self- esteem.
Community Based Instruction: The skills addressed in the above course work will be addressed in the community once or twice a week as needed. The instruction includes selecting and purchasing meals at local restaurants twice a month. This course requires your child to bring $15.00 at the beginning of each month to pay for these meals.
Inclusion: This year some of my students will be taking courses in the regular education classroom setting. These courses include ROTC, Art, Adult Responsibility, Home and Family Living, and reading.
