A new reading activity will be implemented this year utilizing the Jamestown Education book, Reading in the Content Areas-Social Studies. Each 9 weeks, students will read 5 articles. Following each reading, students will answer 6 types of questions: main idea, subject matter, supporting details, conclusion, clarifying devices and vocabulary in context. Students will then chart their reading comprehension score and graph their progress.

The chart will be utilized to diagnose those questions that are missed consistently and require remediation, while the graph will be used to survey the progress over a period of time.

Standards that are addressed in this activity are: LAA.1.3.2, LAA.1.3.4, LAA.2.3.1; LAA.2.3.2; MAE.1.3.1

CLASS SYLLABUS

Geography-Western Hemisphere

Welcome to 7th grade World Geography. My name is Mr. Jamison and I am excited to have you in my class. This year we will be concentrating on the countries of the Western Hemisphere. Please read the information below very thoroughly. It details class requirements and expectations.

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to have the students acquire an in-depth knowledge of the physical environment and geographical regions of the Western Hemisphere.

Class Expectations:

  • Class Work: The foundation of this class is rooted in "work ethic." I expect each student to give their very best effort on a daily basis. Anything less is unacceptable. It is my hope that the students will recognize and appreciate the value and virtue associated with a "good work ethic."

  • Behavior: I have only one behavioral expectation: Do the “right” thing. By 7th grade, students should know how to act in a classroom.

Materials

Jump drive/flash drive; Windows XP compatible

  • Students WILL NOT be able to save their work on the computers this year. It is very important that a jump-drive be purchased so that assignmentds may be saved and worked on over several days.

 Class Participation

Class participation is a combination of attendance, having daily materials, following classroom procedures, participating in class activities and utilizing the agenda book

Attendance is an important factor for success in this class. Much of what we do is discussion or class oriented. It cannot be duplicated outside the classroom. Once the class participation grade has been established, it will be adjusted downward according to the number of absences accumulated during the current 9 weeks grading period.

0 to 10 absences: no adjustment

11 or more: percentage of adjustment to correspond with # of days absent

Literacy Folder

Students will be required to keep a folder of various in-class assignments.
Assignment requirements and scoring criteria are posted under the Main Menu: Folder Requirements

Attendance/Make-up Work:

AN ABSENCE DOES NOT EXEMPT A STUDENT FROM COMPLETING AN ASSIGNMENT

In order for you to benefit the most from school, you must attend school. It is YOUR responsibility to get your make-up work. You will be given the same number of days to make up your work as you were absent.

Due Dates:

Every assignment has a due date. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

 Tardies

You are expected to be on time to class. This means in your seat, pencil sharpened and materials ready when the bell rings. You will be allowed 3 tardies per nine weeks with no penalty. A 4th tardy will result in a dean’s referral.
