Why Study Latin?
Welcome to Latin at Neville High School! Many in the world of education have deemed Latin to be a "dead" language. On the contrary, any present or former student of Latin will quickly clarify that the nearly 3000-year-old language is very much alive and continues to thrive in the local community, the nation, and the world in various forms. The benefits of studying Latin for Neville students are too many to enumerate here, but a few of the most obvious reasons include the following:
1. Knowledge of Latin improves English vocabulary. Over 60% of English vocabulary derives from Latin.
2. Knowledge of Latin improves the learning of the Romance Languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian)
3. Knowledge of Latin improves analytical skills which improves SAT/ACT scores
Not only will students improve their linguistic and analytical skills through their study of Latin, but they will also have the opportunity to use this language as a portal into ancient history, mythology, and culture. The themes, ethics, and philosophies observed in this world are truly timeless and invaluable in helping us understand the history of our own nation and its place in an ever-changing global society.
