ORGANIZATION POSITIONS AND AFFILIATIONS

Our school is affiliated with several professional organizations in music education.

INTERNATIONAL:

Donald DeVito is chair of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) commission on community music known as Community Music Activity (CMA).   This commission includes innovative music program coordinators from universities, public schools and grant funded programs internationally. Members create music programs and conduct research to assist populations in need. Programs are developed in locations such as prison systems, hospitals, churches, and for senior citizens and children with disabilities.  The commission meets every two years the week prior to the main ISME conference and shares their current research and project developments.

NATIONAL:

A continental organization entitled The North American Coalition for Community Music is being created to combine institutions with music programs that are designed to assist populations in need through music. Over sixteen university music programs and Sidney Lanier were invited to meet at the Hewitt School in Manhattan last year to create this organization. Sidney Lanier was invited due to our community music program for children with disabilities and their families. Examples of institutions that are participating include: the Univ. of Western Ontario, the Univ. of Iowa, the Univ. of Wisconsin, NYU, and Sidney Lanier among others).I am organizing the next meeting in Orlando this January 16, 2009.  A mission statement, vision statement, and action plan are currently being prepared by the group. This is in essence a regional version similar in ways to ISME’s commission on community music. Click below for the website:
