STUDENTS + PARENTS + TEACHERS = SUCCESS
Hi,

     I am happy to see so many student working so hard on first grade skills!  Please take a little time to read the following information together to learn about our classroom procedures. I hope this will help us stay connected throughout the year.

     A newsletter is sent home every Friday. You'll find upcoming events, skills for the week, spelling words, vocabulary words, the fluency story, and homework expectations. 

     The newsletters must be kept in the Homework Folder. Review the spelling and vocabulary words often. A final vocabulary test is given every week as well as at the end of every nine weeks. 
     
     We have begun the Accelerated Reader Program (AR) . You are encouraged to take AR quizzes daily. You will be allowed to choose books from the media center. You may take AR quizzes at your level when you are ready. Parents should let students read to them and ask appropriate questions to check for understanding. I have sent a yellow page with several suggestions for questioning before, during and after reading. If you need another copy, I'll be glad to send another one. 

     Please practice math facts at home. You cannot rely on class lessons alone to become an expert at math facts. You must practice on your own time. Learning the facts by heart will free you up to learn other math skills as the year goes on. A quiz will be given periodically. The unfinished facts will go home so you may complete them. Your goal is to get more and more facts completed correctly in one minute each time we take one in class. 

     The Behavior Calendar goes home everyday. It is located in the homework folder. Leave it in the calendar all month and I will replace it monthly.

     Parents should come in for a conference to discuss progress or other concerns. Just send a note and we can make arrangements for a day and time.
