We are currently working on reading comprehension skills. The students are often asked to read a story and answer comprehension questions based on what they have read. All answers must be written in complete sentences, begin with a capital letter, and end with a period. Please continue to ask your children to write in complete sentences. I constantly have to remind the students to put capital letters and periods at the end of the sentences.
Our Reading Series this year is broken up into 5-Day Cycles. On the 5th day the students will be taking a test out of their FCAT Weekly Assessment Book. This carries a weight of 65% of their quarterly grade. At the end of each unit (which consists of 6 weeks) the students will be taking a FCAT Unit Assessment. This test is also 65% of their grade. Everything else in the quarter is 35% of their grade (Reading Selection Tests, Vocabulary, etc.)
During our Reading Block the students work with me in a whole group setting, a small group setting, and they work in centers.
Please encourage your child to read their AR books every night. Each child is allowed to check out three AR books at a time from the library. They may check out new AR books after they have read and tested on all three books. It is our goal that every child tests on an AR book daily.
