Our Classroom Rules and Behavior
Our Class Rules!
We have discussed the importance of rules in our classroom. The children understand that each individual has both rights and responsibilities which create a safe and enjoyable environment in which to learn. After a class discussion, we put our rules into categories of “Good Character”. We compiled a list of rules that fit under four important values:
1. Be Caring
2. Be Fair
3. Be Respectable
4. Be Responsible
Each day the students will show these traits of “Good Character”. However, mistakes are made, and sometimes we do not make the best choices. With this in mind, we agreed that we will use a traffic light to monitor our behavior.
Our class behavior traffic light will help your child visualize the importance of good behavior. All students start each day at the green light, students clips are moved to the yellow light when given a warning, if behavior persists their clips are moved to the red light. As a class, we strive to make good choices that align with the class rules listed above. However, mistakes are made, and sometimes we do not make the best choices. With this in mind, we agreed that the following steps be taken.
1st time: Move clip to the yellow light (warning), slow down and think about our actions.
2nd time: Move clip to red light (stop) and participate in a problem-solving conference with the teacher.
3rd time: Give clip to teacher and a note will be sent home to guardian(s) to explain the situation, (signature required).
*Each day we start over at the green light together!
Our aim is to create a positive atmosphere in our classroom. Children are acknowledged and rewarded for good choices. Students will be given the opportunity to earn “magic stars” as a class and work towards a class party or special activity. I often remind the students that the best thing about a mistake is that it can always be fixed. If your child comes home and tells you that they received a yellow light at school, it is important that you focus on how they solved their problem rather than the problem itself. I also stress the importance of forgiveness. Please discuss these values with your children so that they better understand the importance of the choices they make in the classroom.
