Welcome to Third Grade

Homework:  There will be Math and Spelling homework just about every night, Cursive Handwriting and Writer’s Notebook several times per week. Grammar, Science and Social Studies homework will be assigned when necessary.

Spelling:  Students are given a list of words on Monday and workbook pages to be completed by Thursday.  Spelling tests will be on Fridays .

Writer’s Notebook:   Students should bring their writer’s notebook home each afternoon and return it to school each morning.  You never know when you might get an inspiration for an idea!  There will be occasional writing homework.

Grades:  Marking period grades are 50% Tests, 30% Quizzes, and 20% Class/Homework.

Math:  Students are allowed to keep at home a copy of our Math textbook.  If you are helping with homework, but are unsure of a procedure, just look at the lesson in the book and you’ll see how we practiced in class.

Birthdays:  The new school policy is to celebrate birthdays once per month, if you wish to send in treats for your child’s birthday. I will notify you as to the date along with the names of other students celebrating birthdays in the same month as your child.

I am looking forward to a fantastic year!  If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at school or by email at theresa.daromando@farmingdaleschool.com .

September 7th

Third Graders have enthusiastically embraced their new role in the upstairs wing! They are off to a great start, already demonstrating  many of the key behaviors in our "Code of Conduct":  Be Safe.    Be Respectful.     Be Responsible. Almost every student handed in their summer work on time. Bravo! They were each rewarded with a homework pass for a future assignment.  They also received an A as bonus test grade in Reading.

                                                                                                            June 2012

Dear September Third Graders,

Soon you will be swimming, biking, going on roller coasters, and enjoying the sun and the beach.  Did you know you can also explore the pyramids in Egypt, fly through a hurricane, survive an earthquake, and travel back through time or into the future?  Through books you can!

To help you get ready for Third Grade I am asking that you continue the learning and exploring you did over the past year by reading.  Enclosed are two books for you to read during your summer break: Song Lee and The I Hate You Notes, by Kline and Here We All Are, by dePaola.  Also enclosed is a menu of reading response activities.  Please choose one of these activities for each book and be prepared to present them to the class during our first week in Third Grade.

Please take care of these books and return them to me on our first day of school.  These activities will count as our first test grade and you will receive a homework pass when they are handed in on time.

Also, to help us get organized for Third Grade here are some supplies you will need to bring with you in September:

•           A one-inch binder

•           Three pocket folders or pocket dividers (one for homework, one for Science, one for Social Studies) to put inside your binder.

•           One composition book (for vocabulary)

•           Two, single subject notebooks (for math)

•           One box of crayons (16 count)

•           Five pencils

•           Two erasers

•           A highlighter

•           A pencil box

Enjoy your summer and make lots of happy memories with your friends and family.  I can’t wait to see you in September and hear all about your experiences!

Sincerely,

Mrs. D’Aromando
