Summer Reading Assignment
For the 2013-2014 School year
Summer brings long days filled with good times and fun, but we cannot forget to spend some time each day reading. Studies show that students who read consistently over the summer return to school in the fall at or beyond the skill level achieved in May. Non-readers lose ground. Reading literature is an avenue for exploring diverse cultures and experiences.
This year’s summer novel is Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan(ALL incoming 9th graders) ; I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan (incoming 10th grader regular ed) ; and ....... (incoming 10th grade honors ed). You will need to either (A) PURCHASE this novel or (B) check out the novel from the library.
To aid in comprehension, I am enclosing a story element worksheet to complete as you read. If you lose the sheet, it is available on this website.
This novel is due by Friday, August 16th. On August 16th, you will receive an examination with objective and subjective test items. Also, upon our first appointment in the library, you will take an AR test on the novel.
If you have any questions during the summer, please email me at dana.ray@lpsb.org. I look forward to teaching you this coming school year.
Sincerely,
Dana Ray
