English I (Honors also):

This course is required to graduate.  The emphasis of this course is on reading and writing.  Short stories, cinematic techniques, nonfiction essays, poetry, drama and the novel will all be studied.  Students will be required to write multiple essays and complete a research project with MLA documentation.  Students may also be required to read novels outside of class. 

This course will cover the following units/ writing workshops:

First semester:

Unit 1:  Coming of Age/ The Writing Process

Unit 2:  Defining Style/  Response to literary or Expository text

Unit 3:  Exploring Poetic voices/  Poetry

Second semester:

Unit 4: Interpreting Drama Through Performance/  Expository writing

Unit 5: Coming of Age Amidst Controversy/ Research

Honors only: The emphasis of this course is also on reading and writing with a more intense, individualized focus on literature, vocabulary and writing.  Additional homework and reading assignments are required.
