Dear Parents/Guardians,

I have the pleasure of teaching art to your children in grades Kindergarten through 8th grades here at HMCS.  I am happy to extend my warmest welcome to the students coming to my classroom.

My art is infused into my life and is a constant through life changes.  It is with me everyday as I give children the tools, techniques and inspirations to create visual representations of the world around them.  Teaching art has become an important part of my life for the past 18 years here at Horace Mann community School.  I draw with the children so our talents bounce off each other and together we create.  My students are expected to work to the best of their abilities and to always strive to give their work an exciting feeling. My students will also be encouraged to think creatively.  We make art, we talk about art and we view each other's work.  The students' art work will be exhibited for all to see, enjoy and discuss throughout the school year in the art room, outside the art room and in the first floor hallway.

It is my goal to guide my students as a community of learners who are dedicated to working hard and to the best of their abilities.  My students progress in an atmosphere of kindness, respect, responsibility and safety.  The classroom guidelines are posted in the front of the classroom and can be found to the right of this website.  I want my students to develop an appreciation for the arts and I hope I can instill in them an appreciation for the beauty found in the natural world and include this beauty in their work.

I will introduce your child to a variety of materials, styles, histories, artists (both past and present) and cultures.  Connections will be made with math, language arts and science topics when appropriate for cross-curricular learning.  In addition, the skills outlined in the New Jersey Learning Standards (found to the left) will be reinforced in our lessons.

Collaboration, cooperation and open communication between home and school are keys to building a strong foundation for a successful art filled school year.  My hope is that your child will have the absolute best art experience possible and gain new skills and confidence throughout the school year.  I can be reached by calling the main office at (201)858-5979, via email, [email protected], message me through Schoology.  You can also check out my webpage for interesting art information (http://app.oncoursesystems.com/school/webpage.aspx?id=374976).

                                          Sincerely,

                                                            Mrs. Catherine Duffy
