Welcome back to the 2023-2024 School Year!!!

I am excited to have the opportunity to work with your child this year. To the returning students, "welcome back" to new students "welcome aboard". I am a trained, certified Orton-Gillingham instructor and I continually attend professional development to find additional methods to add to my teaching. I LOVE what I do, teaching the "rhyme & reason" of the phonics to children. They will learn why we pronounce and write words they way we do. They need "DIRECT-EXPLICIT" instruction to grasp our language in a way they understand. Once they are taught these skills the puzzle pieces come together for them.

The program is systematic and sequential. It is important that you have your child read over their individualized word lists in the "COPS" book to improve fluency and prosody (the rhythm, sound, inflection of speech-fluidly reading) . You will witness growth in your child along with the  skills they learn to help break the code for them. Orton Gillingham is very structured your child will progress throughout the scope and sequence at a rate appropriate for them. Each of my lessons are "individualized for YOUR child". I believe in teaching the material as quickly as I can, but as slowly as your child requires.

Word lists and passages will be in your child's "COPS" notebook (this book was created by myself and another other OG instructor in town). I ask that your child read the lists & passages in their book each day to strengthen their decoding and fluency skills. This book DOES NEED TO BE RETURNED to school each day after reading it. Your child will have the reading assignment written down in their homework pad before ending their session with me.

Have your child read to you.... anything.... captions, street signs, their favorite magazine or book. Expose them to vocabulary and have their word banks incease. PLEASE DO NOT overload your child! When they come across and unfamiliar word ask them "to code it". They will transform the unfamiliar word into a "picture" in their mind and allow them to "see" what the word says.

Let them show you their strengths .......and watch them flourish in their reading ability.
