Welcome to Language Arts. I am very excited to be your language arts teacher and I look forward to working with each of you. We are going to have a great year!

Overview

     The language arts literacy program is designed to comply with the NJ Core Curriculum Standards and gives every student a firm foundation of skills and strategies to prepare them to be effective readers and proficient communicators while writing, speaking, and listening. Students will learn to apply reading strategies while reading a variety of materials including the McGraw-Hill anthology selections & leveled books. Students will also be reading selected novels, which will be read by the entire class or in small groups. Students are also encouraged and responsible to read independently using the Scholastic Reading Counts computerized reading program (see SRC).

     In addition to reading, students will receive daily instruction and practice in order to apply spelling and grammar skills into their writing. All students will be introduced to 5 spelling “core words” approximately every 5 days. Students will be encouraged to write legibly using cursive handwriting and develop their writing skills using the 6+1 Traits of Writing (see 6 + 1 Traits). In addition, students will develop their speaking and listening abilities through class presentations and discussions.
