Come along and share the experience as we navigate the Rivers of Knowledge in Second Grade.

Welcome to our 2nd grade classroom of 09 -10 school year. We are a class of 18 students.

Reading in second grade focuses on improving reading skills by working on new vocabulary, decoding new words and reading fluency. We expand and develop our Reading by perfecting "How to read" by learning the 74 phonems; and understanding better "What we read" by predicting outcomes; inferencing; drawing conclusions; and finding the main idea.

Our goal in math is to become proficient in single and two-digit addition and subtraction as well as becoming comfortable with telling time and counting money. We work much on problem solving and critical thinking. The "Scott Foresman Math" series is used for the instruction of Math along with many manipulatives.

Writer's Workshop is another important component in our classroom. Students keep a Writer's Notebook in which they learn to become skilled, confident writers. In 2nd Grade,
the students are developing their writing abilities by doing personal narrative writing,writing letters to penpals, creating books, writing poems, and studying spelling words.

All these skills are reinforced by integrating science and social studies throughout the daily lessons. We're looking forward to a great year!
