Critical thinking is a skill that we work hard to develop in third grade. The following suggestions are ways you can participate with your child in the reading and critical thinking process.
Reading Comprehension:
1. Ask your child questions while he/she is reading or after reading.
Fluency:
1. Reread books that your child has read multiple times. Reading the same books means they have already recognized the words in the story, so stumbling over words will not be an issue. Then your child will be reading words quickly and fluently.
2. Time your child on reading a passage over and over to see if he/she can get a faster time.
3. Read to your child so they hear how a passage is supposed to sound.
Accuracy:
1. Have your child read with his/her finger on the words that he/she is reading. Doing this will help him/her make sure to look at each word being read. Once your child is reading accurate words, taking the finger away will help them speed up reading to read fluently.
2. Point out words that your child said incorrectly while reading. Have your child reread the sentence with the correct word in it.
Good readers should be able to:
1. Look back in the text and find information.
2. Comprehend and summarize what he/she read.
3. Predict what might happen next in a story.
4. Relate the story to another story or make a personal connection with the story.
5. Understand cause and effect relationships.
6. Sequence events in order.
