Second Grade to Third Grade Summer Reading and Writing Project
Each student will read 5 books on his/her reading level throughout the summer. For each book, students need to complete a postcard and drop it in the mail. The front of the postcard should have a carefully, well-drawn picture that goes with the story. NO stick figures, please. Make the characters look real. The front should be completely colored like a postcard. It should also be realistically colored (ie: no pink skies or purple grass). The back of the postcard should have a short message written neatly. The message should tell me the title of the book, list the main characters, and tell two things you liked about the book. Be sure to sign the card. Drop it in the mail and I will stop by the school and pick them up.
Dear Parents,
Research has shown that a child needs to read many books throughout the summer to stay on reading level. Without reading, a child will most likely lose at least two reading levels. I will be testing your child in September to see if they maintained or need to repeat levels. They have worked very hard during the school year, but must continue to practice just to maintain the current level. Your child _________________________ is on level _____________ and should read books from that level only. Please choose from the titles attached in this packet. Five postcards, previously stamped and addressed, have been provided. I look forward to seeing your child’s postcards throughout the summer. Have a great time reading with your child.
