"Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, anything can happen!"

- Johann Wolfgang

My name is Mrs. Hallie Rivera and I am a third grade teacher at Meaux Elementary.   This will be my 9th year teaching elementary school and my second year here at Meaux.  I can't wait to spend it with this year's new third graders so we can make many "Magical Memories"! (Can you guess what this year's theme is?)

Look to the right side of this page, you will see some very useful links.  The first link will bring you back to this page.  The second link is for your child's homework.  Each day I will have our assignments posted here for you to review if needed.  **** PLEASE NOTE - Some days I may feel the need to reteach a certain concept and that will alter your childs homework.  While the homework site is usually correct, there will be times where it is not.  The most current homework list will be in your child's planner.

Take the time to look at the third link.  It is a website put together by Mrs. Stacey from Dozier Elementary. (Thank you Mrs. Stacey!!!!) It contains websites that cover EVERYTHING we teach in third grade.  I often use this page in my classroom as well!  You will find something for every subject.  For example - Make sure to look in Math at the Facts page.  This year your child will be asked to complete 100 addition and subtraction facts in 5minutes, followed with multiplication and division by the end of the year.  This practice can make all the difference.
If you look in Reading, you will see each weeks' vocabulary words, spelling words, and skill practice. Do you want more practice or review in Science and Social Living? Go there to find some of the same sites I use in class and then some.  Don't forget to click on Language for practice in writing and grammar.  If you have children in other grades, I set the link so you can access all grade levels  (Also very useful for the third grade child that wants to be challenged with higher material!)
You can also use this site to check your child's grades at any anytime.  You just need to set up your username and password.

If  you need any more information, feel free to call the school, send a note, or email me at hbarras@vrml.k12.la.us   .   I will get back to you as soon as possible.

HOMEWORK REMINDERS -
Reading -  Read AT LEAST 10 min. every night.  Please have an adult sign the reding log.   A vocabulary study guide will be sent home on Mondays.  Please complete it and discuss the word meanings every night.  A test will be given on each Friday.
Reading test will always consist of a vocabulary section and a true comprehension test.  True comprehension test are passages they have never seen.
Math - assignments will be given in their math books most nights (with exception to test days and lessons that take more than one day), Math facts should be studied (first addition, then subtraction, multiplication, and finally division)  I highly recommend flash cards and computer sites.
Spelling - Monday - complete a t-chart and sort the words by what they have in common
Tuesday and Wednesday  - write words and sentences two times each
Thursday - study for the test.  Some ideas:  dry erase boards, magnets on a pan, use a toothpick to write on Playdoe, shaving cream OR salt in a pan, word program on the computer, etc....Get creative!
Social Living - Don't forget to study your study guides, We  highlight which items we have studied so far in class.  At times, home projects will be assigned for a grade.
** Students will not be punished for incomplete homework, but I do reward them for completing it all week with Jr. Pat. Cash.**

Every Monday, a newsletter will be sent home explaining what the class will be doing that week and test dates.

Every Wednesday, test papers/conduct chart will be sent home.  Please have an adult sign and return it on Thursday morning.

Thanks for all that you do.  Let's have a wonderful, educational, and magical year!
