Language Arts Description
The use of language helps students express themselves fluently in both the written and spoken forms. The focus of the school is to concentrate on the enhancement of a student’s knowledge regarding the accurate usage of grammar concepts in both the written and verbal forms. Students are encouraged to “say it right, hear it right, and write it right”. Understanding of these concepts will be assessed throughout the academic school year using various types of projects in addition to classroom assignments to determine a students’ understanding of the subject.
Textbooks –Prentice Hall Writing and Grammar: Communication in Action, Bronze Level, Timeless Voices Bronze Level and Warriner's English Composition and Grammar, First Course, Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop and CRCT Coach
Book Report Requirement – Students will complete book reports each nine weeks grading period. The students should choose books used for an accelerated reader test or another book approved by the language arts teacher (approval must be received before the book report is accepted). The goal of these requirements is to increase the literacy level of the student as they advance during the school year. Students are to take their AR book with them to every class during the day. Students are encouraged to read a variety of genres and expand their scope of literature. (A total of twenty-five book each year GPS ELA7RC1; 1,000,000 words est.). Students will not be given credit for a book report that is read as a class novel assignment. The Accelerated Reader Book List is available in the SGMS Media Center, and the Live Oaks Library. Students are encourage to use this list, with approval from teacher. All book reports and essays must be typed on unlined paper. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE ACCELERATED READER POINTS (Set by their GOALS) EACH NINE WEEKS AND HAVE TWENTY - FIVE BOOKS READ THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
Make-up Work – Review the student handbook for policies regarding the make-up of tests and other assignments. Any assignment missed due to suspension or unexcused absence will result in a “0” for the assignment.
