Course Information:
Math class is an eighty minute class period enabling us to spend more time investigating the topics that we are studying with activities, projects and experiments. Our math program is called "Connected Mathematics". During this period your child will be working independently and in small groups investigating and discovering how math is a part of our everyday life. Writing reflections will be an important part of the math assignments. This gives your child a chance to write what he/she has experienced or discovered in class. Your child will be working on math skills and strategies to build academic success and confidence in math.
Practice Work:
Practice work, also known as homework, will be assigned as needed. These assignments will be recorded in the student's agenda at the start of the class or at the end of class. It may not be every night. Practice work at home reinforces what has been learned in class and gives the student an opportunity to obtain additional help the following day during class. If it is assigned it is VERY IMPORTANT that it is completed the best he/she can and to bring any difficult problems in the next day for clarification. You can check what the assignment is by viewing my web page at www.millvillenj.gov. Click on "homework" then "lakeside" then my name. Instructions are located in math notebook (pink paper).
Being prepared:
A math notebook (sprial, 70 page, wide ruled), math text book, agenda, any assignments, and a pencil must be brought to class EVERY day.
Attendance:
Attendance is very important with this math program. The program emphasizes a great deal of group work and student investigations. Class work is a major part of the grade. To achieve maximum success, it is of utmost importance for each student to be present. Any extended absences should be avoided.
Absent:
If your student is absent, he/she will need to check the absent folder and chart with notebook table of contents first thing upon his/her return to get any assignments he/she missed. It is his/her responsibility!! He/she will have as many days as he/she was absent to make up the work.
Assignments:
They are to be handed in on the day that they are due. Late work will not be accepted unless absent. It is the student's responsibility to seek missed assignments and to turn them in within the time frame of their absence.
Grades:
Test 25%
Quizzes 25%
Classwork 30%
Practice work 10%
