In the 6th grade we are using the Everyday Math series. Your child was given several resources as part of this series to promote orgainzation and rigor. The Student Reference Book is a great place to find examples and definitions to help you and your child with their homework. I have gone over with each class how to use the SRB to help with homework troubles. Due to the use of the SRB, you as the parent may only be needed for guidance and support. It is a great reference for review for both the students and the parents. In sixth grade, I have stressed to the students the importance of student centered learning. Ultimately it is up to them to be the best student and learner they can be. Click on the links under the main menu along the left hand side for math games and practice sites.
Welcome to 6th Grade at Lakeside Middle School!
The Study Link contains a family letter in the beginning of each unit. This letter is a great way to familiarize yourself and your child with the up coming unit. The study link will be one of the two assignments they will have for homework on a nightly basis. This worksheet is a review of that day’s lesson.
The second homework assignment will come from the journal workbook. These are called math boxes. The math box is simply a spiraling review of everything they have learned from first grade all the way through sixth grade. It may also contain some questions they do not yet know how to do. I have asked all students to attempt all problems, even those problems they know nothing about. They are to do this by using the SRB for help. The reason they are given problems they may perceive as "impossible" is so when I teach it in class they are already somewhat familiar with that particular topic. That makes the learning smoother because many of the students, especially those who have a tough time learning math, already have some experience and feel more comfortable with the topic.
