**Social Skills to discuss at home**

We have been working on social skills for school, home, and community. I wanted to share a few key points that we have been talking about in class.

  1. Hugging: We have been discussing the importance of being aware of other people's personal space, and how some people do not feel comfortable with being hugged. Now that the boys and girls are getting older, we have been stressing either giving "high 5's" or "fist bumps", but also giving side hugs rather than hugging from the front. We have discussed and role-played this in class, and ask that you also discuss this at home.

  2. Speaking Politely: We work very hard every day to encourage the students to speak politely to all students and adults. We stress using words "yes, please", or "no thank you" (for ex. at snack time when being asked if they would like something to eat or drink). Also, we are working hard on the students answering nicely when their name is called. Often times, when their name is called, the response is "What?" We are stressing that they at least respond with "Yes" and then the person's name who is speaking to them.
