Physical Education Class

About our Class

Due to the rising obesity rates amongst our country’s school age children, we are placing more emphasis on the fitness components this year. We are hoping to equip each student with more knowledge concerning fitness monitoring, setting fitness goals, and identifying ways to become and stay more physically fit.

Grades K-3
We are in the process of creating and updating our own student fitness portfolios. Students will be able to self monitor their growth changes and fitness results from school year to school year. This portfolio will contain each student’s own personal fitness data such as height, weight, and blood pressure.   Body mass index (BMI), resting heart rate, target heart rate, physical fitness levels, stress levels, nutritional analysis, and sleep analysis will eventually be determined and completed in physical education class in future classes.
The purpose of the portfolio is to help each student compare his/her measurements to the national standards/recommendations, identify any areas that need improvement, and develop a plan/goal/activities to address each individual student’s needs. The information and analysis to be taught can be an extremely valuable tool in showing students how to monitor their own health/fitness levels not just now, but for the rest of their lives.

Grades 2-3 Activities
At these grade levels, we are beginning to work on sport specific skill areas and then reinforcing these skills in lead up activities to actual game play. Cooperative play, sportsmanship, and NOT KEEPING SCORE are emphasized during these lessons so that students focus on their own individual skill progression. We will also focus on team building, cooperative activities and sportsmanship.

Grades K-1 Activities
We are learning about why physcial education is so important to our bodies. Locomotive movements, personal space and activities that accentuate the basic fundamental skills are what we emphasize at this age. We also discuss personal hygiene,  the food pyramid and making healthy food choices.
