Course Description:

Read 180 is a research-based, proven program designed to increase students’ decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. The model includes experiences in whole-group and small-group instruction, independent reading, and technology-based learning. Read 180 is designed to be a remediation course. Once you complete Read 180, you can enter English I at the high school level.

Course Outline:

Whole-group and small-group instruction is teacher led and directed, and it includes the use of an rBook where students read, write, and react. During small-group instruction, skills are reinforced and practiced. Read 180 software allows for differentiated instruction at students’ specific skill levels. Modeled and independent reading is designed to help students build fluency and reading comprehension skills using paperbacks and audiobooks in their Lexile ranges.

The first thing we will do every day in class is have 10 minutes of whole-group instruction. You will complete your journal/“do now” at this time. This is graded. After the first 10 minutes, students will then break up into small groups. They will then complete the rotation of small-group instruction, independent reading and software rotation. All portions of this rotation are graded. These rotations will last for 70 minutes. Students will spend approximately 23 minutes at each rotation. Finally, students will come back to whole group for a 10-minute wrap up of what we have learned today.

St. Martin Parish Approved Instructional Materials:

Read 180 Topic Software, Scholastic Reading Inventory, Reading Counts and rBook resources.

Methods of Assessment:

Reading Counts quizzes, Read 180 Topic Software scores, rSkills tests, rBook Workshop Wrap-up activities, reading logs, journals/“do now” warm up activities, tests, quizzes, in-class assignments, and projects.

St. Martin Parish Approved Point Distribution:

  1. Read 180 Topic Software scores: 2 grades out of 100 points= 200 points per week. I will access your information on Fridays to input into the grade book.
  2. Journal/“Do now” writing assignments: 10 points per day=50 points per week (Picked up every Friday)
  3. Reading Logs (done in independent reading rotation): 10 points per day=50 points per week (Picked up every Friday)
  4. Reading counts quizzes: The computer will average your scores from how many books you have read. I will use your average.
  5. rSkills test: These tests are to be given no less than three times a year. We will probably have a rSkills test every nine weeks. They are worth a total of 100 points of which 25 points come from multiple choice questions. The writing portion is scored-based on points assigned by Scholastic.

These are your major sources of grades for Read 180. All of this is approved by St. Martin Parish School Board. All Read 180 teachers are required to grade the same throughout the district.

Classroom Rules: R.O.A.R.

  1. I will be engaged.
  2. I will participate.
  3. My actions, my consequences.
  4. I will show respect.
  5. I will be positive.

If you break any of these rules, the first consequence is a warning. The second consequence is a student-teacher conference. This can happen in the hallway or in the classroom. The third consequence is a phone call home. The fourth consequence is a referral and a trip to the Dean of Students’ office. I will request that you have lunch detention for the first and/or second offense. After that, I will ask that you go to AC for a block. This means that you are not working on the Read 180 software and your grades will suffer! If you are having a bad day and feel this might cause you to act out or refuse to do work, please let me know at the beginning of class. We may be able to come up with a solution to fix the situation together.

Classroom Procedures:

My classroom procedures are very important to me. We will practice things like rotations and other procedures until you fully understand my expectations. Students are only allowed 3 bathroom passes per nine weeks for emergency only. This is to help students maximize their time in the class and on the software. Their grades will suffer if they are not in class working. I have a class reward system in place. Students who follow rules and procedures will earn Roar points, etc. This will help us establish a positive classroom environment.
