Phonemic Awareness - the understanding that spoken words are made up of small pieces called phonemes.

Phonological Awareness - encompasses larger units of sound (syllables, onsets, rimes, etc.)

Alphabetic Principle - represented sounds (phonemes) are represented by letters (or groups of letters) in written language.

Phonemes - smallest units of sound that make up one speech stream.

Onsets/Rimes - onsets are the initial consonant of a word or syllable and rimes are everything after the initial consonant (often called phonograms and/or word families).

Blending and Segmenting - dividing sounds and putting them back together.

Rhymes - words that have the same ending sound (simple and clear ones work best).

Chunking - word recognition strategy where readers recognize chunks of words such as syllables, onsets/rimes, and/or little words in bigger ones.

Invented Spelling - childs spelling based on letter names and/or sounds (also called creative or developmental spelling).

Syllables - a sensible way to pull apart words is to clap and count syllables.

Patterns - many words follow familiar patterns such as CVC, CVCe, etc. - learning these patterns helps readers read unknown words.

Alliteration - words with same beginning sounds (tongue twisters).
