ZEARN - Mission 4, Lessons 21-29 and unlock Lesson 30 by Tuesday 4/2 @ 7am

 

Welcome back to school for the 2023-2024 school year!   My name is Valerie Taylor, and I am so excited to be teaching your child fifth grade math and social studies this year. Communication is going to be the key to a successful year for everyone involved. We are going to have a great year!

 

MATH

We will be using the Eureka Math Squared curriculum as well as the Zearn online program focusing on place value through thousandths, operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, coordinate planes, volume, and all things fractions this year.  I will be dropping short instructional videos for each lesson in your child's google classroom accounts they may access from home if they need help or review during the year.    

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

This year we will be learning about the world history, including the medieval world, African cultures, civlization in the North America, the Inca and Aztec Empires, Renaissance and Reformation, and the first Global Age.  We will be using Bayou Bridges curriculum as well as Social Studies Weekly, which is a newspaper and online articles.  Your children may have social studies homework if we do not finish something in class.  Students will be taking notes and using grpahic organizers to create documents to study for unit tests and vocabulary tests.  They will spend half of each nine weeks learning social studies with me and the other half will be learning Science with Ms. Gayden.  

 

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

GOOGLE CLASSROOM will be your best friend!  Have your child log in from home  so that you can see what we did each day!  It will also have important dates as well.

Students will be using Google Classroom daily for assignments in math class.   I will be uploading instructional videos, homework assignments, exit tickets, and websites with extra practice if needed.  

 
HOMEWORK POLICY
You can expect your child to have homework Monday- Thursday night during the week to practice.They will bring their Apply workbook back and forth as where that is where their homework will be.
Homework will be checked for completion the next day.  Your child will start out with a 100 as their homework grade and 5 points will be deducted for every time they do not have their homework completed. 
 
ZEARN

  • Zearn will be used daily to preview/practice skills we have learned in class. 

  • A certain number of Zearn lessons (usually 3-5) will assigned every Monday for the week and will be due the following Monday morning at 7 am for completion grades. 

  • Each lesson completed will be worth a 10 point completion grade in my gradebook.  

  • Zearn completion grades will be given for each module each week!

Class Dojo app - We will be using this app to share news, updates, important reminders, and photos from class.  You may also send private messages to any of the 3 teachers to see how your child is doing in school or to get in touch with us for anything.  Until the internet issues have been resolved, this will be the best way to contact me as my email is not currently working.  I do ask that any private matter is not posted to the news feed, but sent in a private message.
