Dear Students and Parents,

We are very excited to begin a new school year and feel that it’s best to start off with a quick note to let students and parents know the expectations for 8th grade math. This letter should serve as guide to help keep us organized and ready for the new challenges that await us.

Classroom Procedures- On most days students will come in and check their homework.  We will then go over any questions or concerns for the homework as a class.  Next we will do our introduction to the day’s lesson and any investigation or exploration that goes with it.  We will wrap up our group work/day’s lesson and then begin any homework.

Workbooks- The first week each student will be given either a Student Journal (SJ) or a Record and Practice Journal (RPJ).  These have a variety of homework assignments and some class activities so it is expected that these are in class EVERYDAY.

Textbooks – Most units will utilize a Math text available in class.  We only have a classroom set of textbooks, so students will not be able to take these home. However, these textbooks are also available online at bigideasmath.com. This online textbook provides students with resources besides the textbook.  They can take practice quizzes/tests, retrieve RPJ pages and watch interactive videos on how to solve example problems.  We will be going over all of these additional resources in class.

Notebooks  & Supplies- Students are expected to have a notebook for class.  They should pick a notebook that they are comfortable using.  I expect work will be done in pencil.

Homework- Homework will be assigned most nights and is expected to be completed at home. Please leave space between each problem to provide for corrections and additional notes.  It is expected that homework is corrected daily so that students have the correct procedures and answers in case they need it for similar problems in the future.

A homework grade will be provided for some homework assignments and the grading policy will be:

3 points – complete;  2 points - more than half complete; 1 point - less than half complete;  0 points - no homework in class.  Homework assignments are written on the homework board in the classroom and are also available online.

Grading, tests and quizzes- Tests and quizzes will be graded using a point system.  Points will be accumulated from these tests and quizzes and combined with any earned from classroom and homework assignments.  The total points earned divided by the total possible points will form a students grade.

Once again this should be an interesting and exciting experience for everyone. Procedures may change as the school year progresses, but we feel we have everything we need to get off to a great start and an excellent year.

Finally, we ask that both you and your child sign this and then place it in the front of their binder.  This will be their first 3 homework points.

Some ideas if you are having trouble with Big Ideas website

Try clearing your history and cookies.

We also offer an alternative to our browser based e-Book for students and teachers to use, so they can still access their resources within the book.

We offer ePub files to students, which will let students download the e-Book and use it within an eReader app on their device. These ePub files are also able to be used while offline.

Some more ideas if the website is not working

The email was sent to us about the issues with Big Ideas.  It has some suggestions but also asks to send us emails when its not working so we can contact Big Ideas with specific information.

Here is email

Hi all!

I know many of you have expressed difficulty with the online Big Ideas textbook recently. We have been in contact with them and are working to resolve these issues.

With that being said, what would be really helpful from you is if you could give me specific examples of things that work one day and not the next, things that are just not working, etc. As you think of it or as these issues arise, please feel free to email me s so that I can forward them to the right people.

One thing they did send us is a link for the Easy Access Home Edition of the textbook (some of you may have this already). If students are having issues loading the ebook, students can access the book via this link.  https://www.bigideasmath.com/students/

Also, while I was exploring the site today I found this blog. It appears they update it when there are difficulties, etc. While that isn't necessarily helpful for getting students access to the book and resources, it could at least give us a heads up when things are definitely not in proper order. http://www.bigideaslearning.com/blog/

Thanks for your help and hopefully we can get this resolved ASAP!
