HADDON TOWNSHIP LANGUAGE ARTS LITERACY GRADE FIVE
The fifth grade curriculum provides developmentally-appropriate literacy experiences that reflect the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Language Arts Literacy. As fifth grade students continue their educational journey, they refine and apply their knowledge of the world of letters, sounds, and words. In an environment that is rich with literature, fifth grade students are guided through daily reading, writing, and word study learning experiences. As they travel the road to independence, fifth graders read for extended periods of time. Texts of various genres, both fiction and nonfiction, become the center of their reading experiences. Verbal expression is developed in an atmosphere of respect, which encourages the importance of active listening as well as that of organized oral communication. Clear, concise, written communication is developed as writers expand upon their writing skills, compose
a variety of written works, and continue to demonstrate a sense of audience, purpose, and independence with written tasks. Interaction with print, non-print, and electronic texts is an integral part of this exciting excursion into the world of reading and writing.
