Hey Students. I do really miss y'all, this was one of my best semesters! I hope everyone is doing well! After our spacescapes we were moving onto portraiture. Here are 3 videos for practicing facial features. All you need is a pencil and paper. If you have drawing pencils then start the sketch with a H, HB, B, or 2B. Shade with 2B and above. The higher the number the darker it will shade. If you only have a normal pencil (2B) sketch lightly and then go darker for the shading.

Portrature is one of my favorite things to teach. I wish I could help but if you follow the video, watch and then pause, just like in class, and you keep practicing you will get better! There are a lot of other tutorials for extra practice on Youtube. Email me your results and I can give you a critique. Good Luck!!

New Tutorials for practicing Portraiture:

This is a video on the dos and don'ts of drawing hair. You don't need to practice the entire head of hair but try a section. It is more than just scribbling back and forth and it requires less effort than what you might think.

This video explains how to set up a whole face with a grid. It is the same grid we use for the pre and post test. Its hairline, middle of the eyes, bottom of the nose, bottom of the lips, and chin. Also include a neck.

This is a good video for dos and don'ts in general with portraiture.

SETTING UP A FINAL DRAWING

1st pick a photo, an image of a  person. It can be you, someone you know, or someone you find on the internet.

2nd Edit and the print the photo to at least 3 inch by 4 inch rectangle. A 3x4 photo will give you an 6x8 or a 9x12 image

3rd. Draw a one inch gride over the photo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxN4Ph-DPuo This video will explain how to set up a 1 inch grid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=088v4hXE4xs This video explains how to use a grid and an explanation of it's function.

4th Draw a 2 inch grid on the paper you are using for your drawing. Draw it very lightly.

5th Begin sketching face. Draw the overall and then go in to details.

6th Erase grid.

7th Begin to add shading. Light to dark.

Here are some videos of a face being drawn. One is step by step and one is time lapsed.

 DRAWING ANIMALS

Here is a video on how to set up body for an animal using simple shapes. This can be applied to any animal you would choose to draw. You identify the major shapes and group them.

This is a video on how to draw the texture of animal fur. Instead of scribling, they show how to use line to create a realistic texture.

This is a video I like to use. It shows how to draw a dog's nose but the same idea can apply to draw many different non-fur animals.
