Working With Sight Words

Sight word acquisition is an important building block in the construction of a child’s ability to read. The dolch sight words are the 220 most commonly read words. Many of these words are not able to be sounded out phonetically. We will be working with your child to help them read these words automatically. There are many fun ways to expose your child to the words and help them retain them.  We will be going over them in class throughout the year.  Having fun with them at home will help as well! The more one-on-one time a child has learning and practicing sight words with an adult, the greater their chances to integrating them into their long-term memory.

Games are a fun, hands on way to help strengthen retention. These games are easy to create at home and can be modified based on the particular sight words we are learning at the time.

The following sight words will follow our curriculum in this order. I will add them to the homework so you know exactly what words we are working on and what we have accomplished to date:0) Check out the fun games listed below!!

Fun with sight word games and activities!

  • Wordo—Played just like the game Bingo, but this version uses sight words instead of numbers on a grid card.
  • Memory—Sight word memory cards can be made using index cards. Write each word on two cards, shuffle and lay face down to play.
  • Word Searches—Create word searches using sight words.
  • Go Fish—Go fish cards can be made using index cards. Write each word on two cards, shuffle and deal to play.
  • Flash cards – Write words on index cards or pieces of paper and use them as flash cards.
  • Sand Play – Writing words with anything other than pencil and paper is always fun.  Put out some sand or shaving cream in a shallow wide pan. Call out the sight words and have your child write the word with their finger.
  • Post it – As with everything, the more you see something the more it sticks!  Post it everywhere; the refrigerator, the mirror in the bathroom they brush their teeth, their lamp.  Any visible place, and each time they see the word have them say it! Post the words on your steps leading to their bedroom or down to the playroom. They must read the word before they take the next step!
  • Applegrams - letter tiles are a fun way to learn sight words. take them with you to restaurants or just play after dinner. See who can make the most sight words:0)

  •

Bathtub letters or chalk make bath time a blast!!

Anything you do at home with them will help reinforce what is happening at school!  Have fun! Here is a list of dolch sight words.
