Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to the new school year and welcome to your new school, The Dr. Joyanne D. Miller School.  As you already know, The Miller School has many enriching and exciting programs to offer students, and our staff is dedicated and enthusiastic.

Some of the skills upon which we will be focusing are:

  • Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences (literature/informational text)
  • Determine the theme of a piece of literature from details in the text and be able to summarize the text
  • Determine the main idea of informational text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text
  • Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a piece of literature, drawing on specific details in the text
  • Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based upon specific information in the text
  • Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences
  • Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
  • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

During the first few weeks of school your student will be assessed to determine his/her reading level.  The tool that we will be using is The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment. They will be assessed again in the spring to determine growth.

District wide we will be using the Guided Reading Workshop Model for Language Arts.

If you have any questions about the expectations for this academic school year please do not hesitate to contact me via email at [email protected].

I will be creating a Google Classroom for each of my groups through which we can stay in contact.

I am looking forward to a terrific school year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Higbee
