Homework Expectations and Reading Log Information

This year, 5th grade students are encouraged to read a minimum of 15 minutes independently at home each night.

There will be a log sheet in your child's take home folders where you may sign each night your child reads for at least 15 minutes. I will keep the classroom tally of how many books we have read, to enter us into our monthly schoolwide contest!

I will most likely not assign any other homework unless there are any tests to study for, or there is any unfinished classwork from that day.  I will be keeping in contact with parents through Remind announcements and privately messaging parents if there are any concerns.

I do not monitor what material is being read at home, therefore please be aware if the book is inappropriate. If you choose to do a book as a family, please help guide the reading if it seems to difficult for your child's reading ability. Students will be taught how to choose "just right" books that are the appropriate level for them.

**Please Note**

When your child is in small group with me, they are reading level appropriate books

When visiting the library I do require one of the two books checked out be a chapter book.

We will be completing 15-20 minutes of silent reading in class, and then I expect another 15-20 minutes to be completed at home.

****However,  I do not require students to complete double reading. This means, that if they are reading to complete an assignment for Social Studies or Science, that then counts as reading for me as well. They just need to complete the reading log accordingly.  In fact, this is considered non-fiction reading which is something that most students need practice on!!****
