GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the second course in the three-year middle school sequence. Topics covered in this course include the following: operations with rational numbers, expressions and equations, ratios and proportional relationships, inferences, geometry, and probability.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Students will acquire and demonstrate knowledge of the concepts, definitions and properties constituting the Georgia Standards of Excellence Curriculum. Students will develop critical thinking and decision-making skills by connecting concepts to practical applications needed to be productive members of society.

COURSE SEQUENCE: This course will be divided into four 9-week grading periods. The topics and standards covered according to the Georgia Standards of Excellence are as follows, but not necessarily in order. We will be using the Illustrative Math/LearnZillion Books.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

Students will analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

The Number System

Students will apply and extend previous understanding of operations to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Expressions and Equations Students will use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions and solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

Geometry

Students will draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them. They will solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics and Probability

Students will use random sampling to draw inferences about a population. Students will also draw informal comparative inferences about two populations. Students will investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability model.

Show What You Know/Review

Students will review all material covered throughout the school year. Students will also begin preparing for the 8th grade math curriculum.

EXPECTATIONS: High expectations are in place for all students to achieve academic success. Students will be expected to abide by the guidelines set forth in the Liberty County Student Handbook, the Midway Middle School rules, and the classroom rules/procedures. All work must be turned in on the assigned due date.

GRADING POLICY: Grades are cumulative through the end of each semester and will be based only on demonstrated mastery of concepts and development of skills, not effort or potential. Updated grade reports will be posted on Parent Portal on a weekly basis so students and parents may continually monitor academic progress. Progress reports will go out every four and one half weeks. The grading policy for math is as follows: 40% tests, 30% class work, and 10% homework, and 20% quiz. Quizzes may be given without warning.

INB-INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK: To keep organized, students will be using a math journal/notebook. It will be used as a personalized reference book so they must make sure they bring it to school every day. If they do not have the notebook, they will be required to take notes on a sheet of paper and transfer them to their notebook once they get home. They will have a random notebook check at least once a quarter. The grade will go under class/daily grade, which counts as 30% or as a test grade at 40%.

HOMEWORK: Students will be assigned homework Monday to Thursday and graded randomly. Homework may be in the form of traditional assignments, unfinished classwork, watching videos and taking notes, IXL or other web-based assignments, etc.

MAKE UP WORK: Students are allowed to make up missed work if they have an excused or unexcused absence. However, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT to ask for work missed and/or check their Canvas daily agenda. Students are responsible for getting, completing, and turning in all missed work within 3 days of returning to school.

ATTENDANCE: TEACHERS ARE REQUIRED TO CONTACT PARENTS AFTER THE 3RD EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED ABSENCE. AFTER THE 5TH UNEXCUSED ABSENCE, TEACHERS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE A SOCIAL WORKERS FORM. EXCUSES MAY BE SENT IN WRITTEN FORM OR EMAILED TO: [email protected]

PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ABSENT EXCUSES TO THE TEACHER.

REPORT CARDS/PROGRESS REPORTS: Report cards are emailed every nine weeks, and school progress reports every four and a half weeks. Please check Parent Portal weekly for your student’s status in all classes.

ASSESSMENTS: Quizzes, tests, quick checks, etc. will be given to determine if standard/s have been mastered. Advance notice given for unit assessments. Other assessments will be considered quizzes. If a student is absent on the day of a scheduled test, he/she will be expected to take the test on the day of his return.

PARENT PORTAL: If you are already familiar with Parent Portal, I encourage you to continue to check on your child’s progress. If his or her grades concern you, call or email immediately for a conference. If you are not set up with a Parent Portal, please, please ask front office personnel how to sign up.

COMMUNICATION: Parents, it is imperative that we keep the lines of communication open. If you have any questions or concerns about your child please do not hesitate to email me, call, or set up a conference. It is important that we catch any problems as soon as they arise. Please provide up to date phone numbers and especially email addresses on the information sheet being sent home.
