A Little Bit About Mrs. Carolyn Olsen

I was inspired to teach by my fifth grade teacher. She was serious about learning, but always taught with a sense of humor. She recommended me for the Safety Program, and that was just the boost I needed to become a responsible, confident fifth grader.

I earned my AA degree at Gloucester County College, and went on to study for a year at Rowan University before moving to Delaware, and completing my BA at Neumann University. During this time I was in charge of the after school and summer programs for KinderCare Learning Center in Wilmington, Delaware. I continued these programs  when I moved back to New Jersey.  I also tutored students at Sylvan Learning Center, which I continued to do even after I began teaching here, at South Harrison Elementary School. As you can see, I took every opportunity I could to work with students  before I found my place here, at South Harrison.

When I began my career at South Harrison I was a Basic Skills teacher. I was given the opportunity to teach with, and learn from, the many  wonderful teachers here. I moved on to teach G&T and even an Art enrichment class. I have taught fifth and sixth grade for most of my career, and although I have taught ELA skills for some of those years, I have always taught Social Studies. I am excited to teach as your students as they discover the events that lead to the founding of our great nation or as they explore the ancient cultures of the World.

I understand that fifth grade is new for you. The new programs, the updated curriculum, the Strong testing and the NJSLA testing, switching classes, and even the lockers (hopefully soon to be used) can be overwhelming. Please feel free to contact me by phone, email, or even ask to meet with me in person, if you have any questions or concerns.
