!Vamos a Cantar!

On dates to be announced, Spanish !, II, and III Honors classes will be caroling in Spanish at Azalea Estates, Avalon Place, St. Joseph’s Assisted Living and Nursing Home, St. Francis on Tower, the Oaks, the Guest House,  and St. Francis Hospital. Following the caroling adventure, students will have lunch at a location to be announced, returning to Neville by 2:30PM.

Preparation for this project requires students to learn all selected hymns and carols, plus some interesting and fun dance moves!

Students also create their own costumes, making their sombreros from cardboard and selecting a piece of fun fabric for their ponchos! The instructions for the construction of the sombrero and the determination of how much fabric to buy are found on my website.  Students have been given a hard copy of this information for their own keeping. Don’t worry; it’s simple! And they CAN accomplish it with minimal help from you!

BY____(TBD)________________, students should bring their completed sombreros to class. They should also bring the piece of fabric that they selected for their ponchos.  I will take care of those!

This project offers three test scores for each Spanish student who will earn grades for :

                       1) practice  preparation, and behavior

                       2) sombrero and poncho deadline

                       3) caroling performance and behavior

Please sign sheet the attached sheet sent home to you and return only that sheet, indicating that you have read and understand the requirements for your son/daughter for this project and that you give your permission for your child to go on this field trip.

¡Muchísimas gracias!

 MAKING THOSE SOMBREROS!

1)  Students need a large piece of cardboard from which will be cut the perimeter of the sombrero.  A large cardboard box is best; poster paper won’t do.

2)  Students need a large circular item for the pattern of the perimeter.  Maximum circumference should be  22 inches.

3)  Students need a small circular item for the pattern for the head hole.

4)  Draw circles around the patterns onto the cardboard.

5)  Cut out your sombrero on the lines you have  drawn.

6)  Spray paint cardboard sombrero on both sides.  Some students like to cover the sombrero with fabric, but I have never required that.

7)  Decorate with any ornaments, lights, beads, fringe, etc., using hot glue to attach.

8) REMEMBER:  YOU MUST BE ABLE TO DANCE IN THIS SOMBRERO SO MAKE IT FIT!!!!!!!!!!

DIRECTIONS FOR BUYING FABRIC

1)  Any  inexpensive fabric you like will do; you choose the price.  The fabric should be colorful and festive.

2)  Measure from the top of your shoulder down the front of your leg as far down as you want your poncho to go.   You will need Mom or Dad to help you because you need to stay standing up straight.  (Most students like them at knee length or a bit longer.  I do not allow them at waist length. )

3)   Double that length and the total is how much fabric you need to buy.  For example, if from the top of your shoulder to your knee measures 36”, double that to 72”, and you will need 2 yards of fabric.
