This year, we are working on spelling patterns. These patterns are the rules that help us both sound out an unknown word, and spell a word we are unsure about how to spell. As students get older, they should begin to internalize these rules so that they become better readers and writers. Since we are focusing on spelling patterns, students will not be getting a spelling list to study. Please check back each week to see what skill we are working on in spelling.

This week, we are working on making verbs past tense (-ed) and present participle (-ing). We have been working on the skill that says you need to double the consonant when you have a short vowel sound. If the vowel sound is long, then we drop the e and add -ed, or drop the e and add -ing.
